Too Soft

"Thank the Saints!" Sofia gasped as I'd opened the door to the inn, rushing to wrap her arms around my neck and making me bend down so she didn't have to dangle in the air to hug me.

"What?" I said, smile bright on my face as I hugged her back. "Did you really think I'd have died or something? I might've been rusty, but come on little Sofie." I let her down and ruffled the top of her brown hair. "Have some faith in me, will ya?"

She didn't even glare or yell at me for messing up her perfect hair, which kind of gave me a clue as to how serious she was being.

My heart broke all over again when I saw the way her bottom lip quivered.

"I'm fine, little coconut," I promised in a whisper, lightly patting her cheek. "I promise."

"Well you better fucking be," she seethed quietly before looking behind me, clearly expecting to see someone else.
