Chapter 19: Either die or die

The sun had set when they returned to the village. There, they found that Sheikh Arqan had sent a request to Dan's father, asking his mother and children to go with his family to her village on the slope.

Dan's father tried to convince Sheikh Arqan to come down to the slope as well, but he insisted on confronting the priest and facing him in front of all the villagers to prove to them that he was not a coward as the priest had spread rumors about him.

Dan's father opposed him, saying, "The priest accuses his enemies of cowardice because he is the biggest coward. He will not give you a chance to confront him! He will send his thugs to kill you, while he stays behind them, far away, until they bring him your head!"

So Dan said, "I have a better solution, father, a solution that Nasash and I have agreed upon. And all of you will be acquitted of the charge of cowardice!"

"What is this solution, my son?" His father asked.

"It is for all of us to jump from the cliff into the lake!"

The father was surprised by the strange and bold suggestion and said,

"I don't know; who guarantees us that we will fall into the middle of the lake and not on its bank? Besides, we are not good swimmers."

Nasash intervened, "I know how to swim, and I have training in rescue. I will jump first, and I'll signal for you to follow."

Dan encouraged his father, "It's an easy operation! And we have to choose now; either the adventure or the inevitable death at the hands of the priest's thugs!"

The sheikh said, "Let us think about it for a while..."
