Chapter 20: Would they take the next step?

Dan turned to Nasash to follow him, and they went out. At the door, he said to him:

"We have to throw the bags of stones into the lake."

"Not now, though. Let's not throw them before we jump directly, so no one there beats us to it."

They entered the cave to pack the bags. While they were doing so, they heard voices from afar. Nasash listened and said:

"Come on, Dan, they are coming!"

They rushed to Sheikh Arqan's house and met them on the way to the cliff. They went back, carried the bags, and stood on the edge of the cliff, balancing them between them, and threw them into the abyss.

Nasash explained the jumping plan, saying: "I and Sheikh Arqan will jump together at first. Then you, Dan, and your father will jump after us, but not before hearing this whistle."

He placed his index and middle fingers between his lips and released a sharp, piercing sound that deafened the ears! Nasass stepped back from the cliff about ten steps, holding the sheikh's hand.

Then he turned to him and said:

"When I say 'In the name of God,' release your legs to the wind with all your strength, jump as far as you can from the edge of the cliff, and try to stay standing while falling."

He didn't give him time to think. The voices of the raging thugs were approaching rapidly.

The blaze of their torches and the gleam of their swords appeared closer. The two men counted and darted into the void.

Dan lay on the edge of the cliff, straining to hear the slight descent of the men. After a moment, he heard a splash in the water, and Dan felt relieved and waited for the whistle, anxiously, and fear gripping him and his father.

There were only about a hundred steps between the forefront of the raging thugs and them. Dan decided to jump off the cliff even if he didn't hear the whistle, and he stood up, saying to his father:

"Come on, Dad...

Dad?!.."
