As the election lurked around the corner, the nominated students were getting engrossed in campaigns.
I could remember a few whom were nominated for various posts. Eric from SS3A, Anita from SS3B, and Temi from SS3A were nominated for the position of an Assembly prefect.
For me, I was still confused as to why Temi was nominated. Imagine organizing the assembly while chewing.
Tobi from SS3A, Samuel from SS3B, and Peter from SS3B were nominated for the position of head boy. Great choices, if you ask me. Those three were brilliant, neat, punctual and what have you.
They literally possessed the qualities of a head boy but well, Tobi was just outstanding.
For the nominees of the head girl post, it was me from SS3A, Lola from SS3A, and Chidera from SS3C. Let's not dive into details of this particular set since I wasn't fully confident that I would win the election.
Then, the nominees for the post of the sanitary prefect were Aaron from SS3A, Aisha from SS3C, and Emeka from SS3A. Forget the fact that Aaron was a mysterious figure in our class or that Emeka sometimes posed as an Agbero, those two were always neat to school. From head to toe, they were always exuding a positive outlook.
These were the set of nominees I was actually aware of and none of them failed to exercise their best during campaigns. Kiki amd I campaigned together most of the time, since we were a duo that many juniors looked up to and admired.
Campaigns were just a hetic experience altogether but, it was actually worth it and could be fun at times.
"Vote for Tobi Tayo for head boy! You're invited to the event holding by 2:00pm today in the students' hall," Eric and Chinedu announced in the lobby as they handed out fliers to students that walked past.
They were Tobi's friends and so was Aaron, but that guy was just another story of his own.
"Na so e don reach?" I asked Eric while Kiki laughed uncontrollably beside me.
"Our boy needs help from his Gs," Chinedu replied in his stead.
"He's too shy for everything and yet he wants to become head boy. Well sha, the campaign is helping them loosen up."
"Vote for Tobi Tayo for head boy!" Eric shouted in my face and handed over a flier to me and Kiki each.
He just wanted us to go to the event since it was a rule that a nominee was not allowed to vote for another nominee.
"I hear you. Stop spitting on my face," I wiped my face with the back of my palm and Kiki pulled me to class.
"It'll be 2:00pm soon. I can't wait to see my Tobi do so well in his campaigns. Mr. Head boy and Miss Social prefect... #lovers #couplegoals #Kibi," Kiki fantasized in my ears immediately after setting an alarm on her iphone for 2:00pm.
"Please take it easy. You will kill me with laughter one day," I laughed hard, tears forming in my eyes.
"Aren't you supposed to be celebrating with me?" She tapped the side of my head playfully and hissed.
"I will celebrate once you're with that one person, Kiki," I smiled but deep down in me, "that one person" wasn't Tobi. Tobi didn't have any feelings for her yet Kiki somehow managed to mistake his kindness and good nature for admiration.
"Ok so, how about I propose at the couple item store after we are head boy and social prefect. Perfect, right?" She snapped her fingers and turned to me with those eyes fill of hope.
I couldn't bring myself to imagine what those eyes would glint of when all that hope would be shattered.
Again, I wanted to tell her the truth but I was scared to see her hurt.
Once it struck 2:00pm, Kiki sped her way to the students' hall, pulling me as usual.
The hall was neatly arranged with chairs that made it serve like the event it was meant to be. Students were trouping in and the seats were soon occupied.
Considering the fact that the two of us were not eligible to vote even if we were convinced by Tobi's manifesto, I suggested to Kiki that we stood by the door and let the juniors have enough seats. The students who arrived at the hall were all from the junior secondary school classes - a different event would be held for those from the senior classes. Even though it wasn't every single junior secondary student that attended, I could tell that these were a majority.
There were boys and girls but the girls were more in number. Of course, the girls were going to be more! Tobi was the hot guy almost every girl fanned over, either junior or senior.
Tobi was already standing in front of the crowd. For the first time since I had known him, he appeared quite composed in front of such large number and exuded confidence to an extent.
Perhaps he had come to terms with the fact that he couldn't become head boy if he continued to stick to his shell.
"Oh my God! He looks so handsome!" I heard a JSS2 girl squeal to her friend.
"Handsome is understatement. Only that guy is hot, hotter, hottest," Her friend squealed also in response.
Tobi was definitely getting votes from these girls, I thought.
"Good day to you fellow students of Nexus High. It is with so much gratitude that I welcome you all to this event," Tobi began. "I will not waste your time but simply go over my heartfelt manifesto. As you all know, the election is around the corner and we all are in search of those excellent set of leaders that will lead us into another era of greatness. I, Tobi Tayo would love to be one of those leaders. Combining my desire for meaningful impact and my intrinsic interest in playing leadership roles, I believe I will be able to make a dilligent worker of my fellow students. As someone who is willing to take up the post of the head boy, I am equally willing to invest my time and skills into the betterment of Nexus high. A school such as this requires not only hardworking comrades but also a hardworking head which I am more than ready to be."
Just like I expected it would, his speech seemed to make an impact on the students. They listened attentively to his words and acknowledged the fact that he was a man of greatness.
"Tobi is just that guy," Kiki sighed. "How can someone just be this perfect?"
If Tobi was perfect, what then could be said about Miles...
I sighed.
As Tobi poured out his speech, he suddenly caught sight of me and Kiki by the door and I could swear that his eyes brightened up.
"And not just me but also someone even more hardworking. A beautiful and talented young lady who is willing to join me at the top as well, Miss Matilda Olusegun please," He said, not for once taking his eyes off me.
Suddenly, I became overly conscious of my surrounding including Kiki's presence.
"Please," He mouthed this time.
"Go," Kiki urged me and proceeded to start a round of applause which the seated students followed up.
I walked up to Tobi and stood at his side to face the students. He took my hand into his, causing my level of anxiety to shoot up.
"Together, we wish to make a change!"
The students cheered and continued with a round of applause. My tension was only eased when I saw Kiki cheering as well.
She must have failed to understand yet again.
"Thank you," Tobi whispered to me.
I could only respond with a smile.
*.*.*.
Since we had spent most of our time that day in campaigns, the SS3 classes were granted a period of rest. Those who were not involved in campaigns were also included and that was how they enjoyed double free periods.
However, these gave us the chance to participate in leisure activities.
We were all still busy in our various activities when our form teacher walked into the class. He only did when he had an important information to pass on or when he wanted to get petty things done.
Our eyes all went in his direction and just when he thought he had come to pass some information, a boy walked in after him dressed in our school uniform.
"Oh my God! Who is this handsome guy?"
"So cool!"
"Oh my! Another half caste in our class but a finer one!"
Everyone made their own comments but I found myself speechless.
It was as if everything in my world had stopped and the only one I could see was him...
The mocha brown skin...The demeanor...The eyes...Those eyes...
Those blue eyes glanced in my direction, unfazed and soon, moved to other parts of the class.
"Miles..." The word only came as a whisper and I clutched my chest.
