The start and fall of Miss Flora

Everyone was busy doing their own thing when the chair lady of Aproko nation ran into the class.

Mind you, it wasn't Abike nor was it either of her minions.

It was the skinny mosquito in our class, Goodness. We nicknamed her "skinny mosquito" but she referred to herself as "Slim Queen."

In fact, slim queen was her name on all her social media accounts.

"Omo!" She rushed into the class, exclaiming and making over exaggerated demonstrations. All these were just her ways of pulling the class' attention.

"What is it again?" One girl was forced to inquire.

"A new Physics teacher is coming to our class!" She blurted out.

The prolonged hiss that spread throughout the class after her response was much deserved.

"So na that one be wetin dey make you scream like village woman," Another girl fired.

"Wait nau!" Goodness stomped her feet on the ground at our similar reactions. "If you see her ehn, very beautiful young woman. From head to toe, too fine."

"We have heard. Go back to your seat, please," Tobi sighed.

"I don't blame you people nau," Her lips went into an upside down smile that showed her disgust at our reactions. "It's myself I blame because I suffered to bring this sweet news for you people."

Responses of;

"Abeg get out!"

"See her legs like chewing stick."

"Shameless human being."

were thrown at her as she walked majestically back to her seat, seemingly unperturbed by the comments.

"Bad eggs must always reside among the good ones," Kiki sneered in her direction and I couldn't stop laughing.

Nevertheless, just as Goodness had said, our principal walked into the class, following behind him was a lady who appeared to be in her mid-fifties.

We instantly knew that she was the new Physics teacher Goodness had been screaming about. However, she wasn't all beautiful as the Aproko claimed. She appeared quite mid and somewhat dry.

"Good day students," Mr. Hakeem began.

"Good day to you, sir," We responded to his greeting.

"I would like to introduce you all to Miss Flora here," Mr. Hakeem continued. "And she'll be your new Physics teacher. I trust that she'll be as good as she has proved to be during the teacher's exam."

He then called out to the lady.

"Miss Flora."

"Sir," She quickly answered.

"I leave them to you," Mr. Hakeem smiled and hurriedly left.

"Hello everyone, I'm Flora," She began with bright smiles. "It's nice to meet you all. I do hope we get along sooner or later."

"So this is the woman that skinny mosquito was disturbing our ears for. She's not even fine sef," Kiki whispered to me.

"Maybe Goodness is trying to give people slim like herself a new face in society," I shrugged.

It was true that Miss Flora was a skinny woman but who were we to judge her because of her looks?

"And I'm a 24 year old woman who seeks to make impact on youngsters like myself."

24?!

She looked many times older than her age, that I already spelt her off as a woman in her mid-fifties.

"We hope to get along with you too," The class erupted in unison.

And we were true to our words within the first few days of Miss Flora being our physics teacher. We did get along with her bad teaching.

"How did she even pass the teaching exam?" Many of my classmates questioned.

Once it was time for Physics, she would walk into our class immediately. She never missed even two seconds into the physics period - she was that determined to bombard our brains with rubbish.

"So today we'll be looking at gravity," She proceeded to write the topic on the whiteboard.

With a textbook in her hand which served the purpose of a reference, she explained everything that had to do with the topic. She dived further into terms she had no idea of and the ones she knew of as well.

"...And so as a result, thunderstorm occurs. This thunderstorm causes the surface of the Earth to shake."

"Ehh!!!" The whole class went into mourning.

"Excuse me?" It was Tobi.

I was a hundred percent sure that he was as surprised as I was when those words flew out of her mouth.

"Do you have any questions?" She raised both eyebrows.

"The only question I have is, how thunderstorms can shake the surface of the Earth?" Disbelief was written all over his face. "Because that is a common sense logic. When something like that occurs, you do not feel its impact and I believe you live on Earth like every one of us."

"What are you trying to insinuate?" Miss Flora snapped. She looked ready to throw punches if one hurtful word would be thrown at her style of teaching.

"Ma'am please, your period is over," Kiki chipped in.

"It is your own period that is over!" She fired back. "I didn't know that this prestigious school is full of disrespectful children. What arrant nonsense!"

Afterwards, her smallish angered frame marched out of the class.

"I'm sorry guys for the way she is. I'll make sure to report this to the school," Tobi's disgust granted him courage to speak to the whole class at once.

"Yeah sure. She needs to go."

"You don't have to be sorry. You're right."

"We need her thrown out now. I still wonder how she managed to pass the teaching exam."

Due to the quick actions of our class prefect, Miss Flora was sacked immediately on the notice of poor teaching. Another physics teacher was brought in and she was exceptionally excellent in teaching.

I could still remember Miss Flora's last words to our class and each time I did, I couldn't help myself from laughing.

"You children are just being heartless and ungrateful. For the past four years since I took up teaching as a profession, I have never been disgraced like this. Nexus high has not only built disrespectful things like yourselves but has also admonished pride and "I know it all" spirit into you all. This dirty character will not take any of you anywhere, I promise you."

"If you have come to curse and insult us instead of teaching or leaving, just see yourself out now," Emeka charged.

"This is the greatest mistake ever made by this school. I can't believe this," Tobi shook his head.

"Just go already. Besides, today is the last you'll ever step foot into our class. You quickie come you quickie come," Kiki did not fail to express her disgust.

"Miss Flora," I began. "All I know you are hurt about is the fact that you are about to lose a job that pays well, otherwise, you won't be saying any of this. You and I know that teaching is not your calling, yet you have been blinded by your wish to earn off our heads without performing your duties properly. Now tell me, how were you able to pass the great teaching exam?"

"All of you are mad!"

And she stormed out in anger. Laughter erupted from the class after her.

We felt fulfilled because we had won the battle against the very first bad teacher ever employed in Nexus high.

Mr. Hakeem did well to apologize to our class and a few other classes that the smallish woman had equally taught.

In the end, Miss Ruth proved to be a better physics teacher.

*.*.*.

The annual election for the post of school perfects soon arrived and campaigns from nominated students were the order of the day.

Luckily for me, I was one of the nominated students for the position of head girl.

Just like some schools did, Nexus high gave students the chance to choose students to lead them - those nominated students were always from the SS3 classes. It was during this period that the game of politics usually started among the classes of SS3A, SS3B, and SS3C.

"Oh ye students of this great school, voting for me as the social perfect will be one of the best decisions you have ever made since you became a student of this school. Just look at me nau, the vibes are all here, the beauty, the creativity, the organization," Kiki made different poses as she acted out a false scene of her manifesto in preparation to me.

"Kiki, please don't," I laughed, struggling not to explode out like a hyena.

"I'm not done yet o," She eyed me and then continued.

"You all know who senior Kiki is nau. The baddie and the brains suit to lead you upcoming baddies in a journey of memory lasting extra-curricular experiences!"

She then switched to dancing legwork and adding a spice of the words, "Ge ge" to it.

Just as Kiki was busy pushing me to laughter, Vivian walked into the class swaying her hips as usual. However, following behind her were three girls from JSS1.

One carried Vivian's heavy school bag while the other two carried a paper bag each. They all struggled with walking in their oversized uniform and school shoes - one of them made it quite obvious by pulling up her falling skirt every now and then.

"Thank you, put them here," Vivian sat down and the girls dropped her stuff on the desk. "Thank you my angels."

Then she stole glances in Kiki's direction. Kiki and I were fully aware of that.

"I know you people already have it in mind to vote for me as the social perfect. Don't worry ehn, once I get into that position, all of you will enjoy. Trust me," She said while still stealing glances at us.

The three JSS1 girls smiled and giggled in response.

"You already have our votes, senior," They chorused.

Vivian smiled in return and proceeded to hand one paper bag to the girls.

"This is for the three of you. No fighting, share it well, ok?"

"Yes, Senior," They celebrated with giggles before running off.

Vivian was Kiki's rival for the position of social perfect. In fact, there were three students nominated for the post and they were Kiki, Abike, and Vivian.

Kiki had always wanted to become a social prefect so I understood why she was so passionate about it.

Abike was not interested in holding any responsibilities, yet she was nominated by the teachers. She barely did any campaigns.

Vivian was just as eager as Kiki was if not more. She was already acting like a school prefect even before the election.

I was eager to see how the whole thing would turn out.
