Racing through the woods, I tried not to look at the shadows along the trail. The way they bend in just the wrong way. How they follow with thousands of steps that shouldn't be there.
"Come on, keep going." I whispered to the horse. Hoping that it would help her run longer. We would have to slow down soon so she could rest. The father and daughter told me not to stop. I tried to ignore the sounds echoing around me. From the hissing and growling to the scratches. Something large snapped behind me. A thud hitting the ground.
SCREEE!
'Don't look. Don't look. Don't look. It's not really as long as you don't look.' I chanted in my head. I kept my eyes on the path before us. The paper map flapping in the wind. I had to keep us on track. I couldn't lose where I am now.
There should be a bridge for us to cross soon. Once we are across, we can breathe for a moment. We can't stop but we won't have to keep running.
