"Alexandra…" Her name rolled off his tongue effortlessly as though it had always belonged there, the deep baritone of his voice causing her heart to skip a beat.

Silence enveloped them in an instant as the air between them crackled with unspoken tension. The flood of memories engulfed them at that moment. How long had it been since they had last seen one another?

Effortlessly, he reached for her back and under her knees, carrying her bridal-style before heading back to the car. 

"Is there anything I can help with? As thanks for… not running me over and providing me shelter?"

"Actually, there is," Caleb said. 

Alexandra turned, raising an eyebrow. She hadn't expected him to so shamelessly take her up on her offer when they both knew it was just to be polite.

"This probably ain't the best time but… Do you want to get married?"

It was all in the name of protecting Alexandra from his mother, that Caleb went radio silent since his mother's threat. That was the reason why he chose to stay quiet, the reason why he didn't contact her in any way or even try looking for her anymore. Caleb didn't know it but Alexandra had the exact same reasons, staying away from him so that his mother wouldn't harm him.

And that was how they stayed apart for so long, pretending that neither of them existed and acting like strangers.

If it wasn't for this very reason and the cruel twist of fate, he wouldn't be tasting cakes with Elisha and he most definitely wouldn't be standing in front of her in the tiny room, getting cake thrown at him.
