Chapter 28: The Plan

Lucy rocked back and forth on her knees. Noah and Veronika stared at her puzzled and dumbfounded.

“So you jumped into the book?” Noah asked again. Lucy resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

“No, I did not JUMP INTO the book. That’s silly. I touched it and it, like, transported me into Celeste’s memories,” she explained. Noah gave her a look.

“So jumping into the book is silly but being transported into someone’s memory through a book is reasonable?” he asked flatly. Lucy eyed him.

“That’s what happened. It was so frightening, I could feel all her fear and emotions. She really thought they were going to kill her too. The way the council interrogated her, it seemed like they really wanted to kill her. I don’t blame her for being terrified again.” Lucy lowered her head and felt guilty for pushing things with Celeste. She didn’t regret having her time with Celeste but she was more understanding of Celeste’s hesitation.

Veronika reached over and rubbed Lucy’s shoulder.
