Chapter 6: Greed for Life

She turned her head, gazing at the man's enigmatic profile with a somewhat pitiful look, her teeth chattering. "Mr. Gu... Gu, the weather is so rainy, could you please slow down..."

But the speed of the car didn't decrease. Liang Shu watched the relentless motion of the windshield wipers, her heart rate soaring to unprecedented levels.

Even during those nights spent in a pitch-dark cave years ago, she had never felt as desperate as tonight.

Liang Shu found it hard to discern the scenery in front of her, her head spinning.

"Gu Han, you didn't even bring along an assistant, bodyguard, or secretary. If something happens to you, amidst these desolate mountains, they won't even find your body..."

Her incessant words were abruptly cut off by a sharp screeching sound. She lurched forward suddenly, only to be rebounded back by the seatbelt.

The car came to a halt.

In a chilling yet eerie voice, the man's words resounded in her ears as he slightly turned his head to stare at her, his lips curling into a wicked smirk. "Afraid of death?"

Still reeling from shock, Liang Shu nodded, "Yes."

Then, somewhat clumsily swallowing, she added, "But I'm more afraid of surviving with missing limbs after falling off a cliff."

He smirked, his knuckles tracing patterns on the steering wheel, sending shivers down Liang Shu's spine.

The man's eyes exuded a ruthless coldness from every corner as he remarked, "If you're so afraid, why risk climbing over the wall? Aren't you afraid I'll break your legs?"

Liang Shu glanced at him, shrinking into her seat, and whispered, "Aren't we going to save someone? Why dawdle?"

Gu Han emitted a cold scoff from his throat, his gaze practically tearing her apart.

Why was he so angry?

She touched her still-sore neck, closed her eyes, realizing she would have to sacrifice more blood for that person later.

Ten minutes later, the car entered the Yushan Villa area.

Liang Shu's suspended heart finally settled.

Following Gu Han out of the car, someone immediately held an umbrella for him.

No one attended to her, but she didn't mind; after all, her clothes were already soaked.

In a critical situation, she followed Gu Han upstairs.

A figure in a white coat emerged from behind the heavy room door. Through the gap, Liang Shu stood at the entrance, gazing upward—

The spacious room was filled with various medical instruments, and on the bed, a faint movement could be discerned.

She couldn't see clearly, only having a vague impression of a very frail patient.

She had been told that the person had been in a coma for many years, and with time, the situation had become increasingly dire.

Several such incidents had occurred in the past six months.

Despite all efforts, including mobilizing blood resources from Yucheng and its surrounding areas, they had all been in vain.

She glanced down at her arm, which had been pricked for blood a few days ago, feeling an unusual mix of emotions.

Gu Han was looking at her now, his gaze inadvertently falling on the visibly reddened skin of her fair neck.

A faint ripple of something unfamiliar stirred within him. He was about to instruct someone to take her to change her clothes when he was interrupted by the figure in the white coat.

"Sir, we can't delay any longer."

"Very well."

Liang Shu sat quietly in the chair, devoid of much emotion, resembling a lifeless doll.

The room fell into utter silence.

Gu Han stood nearby, his presence weighing heavily on the surroundings.

As the needle pierced Liang Shu's arm, her delicate brows furrowed, unconsciously inhaling sharply.

The man's eyes remained deep and silent, watching as the crimson blood trickled down the needle, his voice barely a whisper, "Be gentler."
