Black Bear (Part 1)

Liang Hongyu found a safe, hidden spot to store the basket.

In the countryside, people were honest and simple.

Although this area was mostly visited frequently by the villagers, but there could always be exceptions, so it was better to be cautious.

After hiding the basket, Liang Hongyu tied a small bamboo basket around her waist and headed into the deeper parts of the mountain.

Liang Hongyu was very attentive to the vegetation on the ground but didn't find the herbs she was looking for.

After walking for more than half an hour, the sun grew increasingly harsh, and her forehead was soaked with sweat.

She looked around and found a large and dense tree.

The big tree is usually used to provide shelter from the sun and provide water.

Just as she finished drinking and was about to close the bamboo tube, she heard a very faint rustling sound to her right, distinct from the sound of wind blowing through the leaves.

She looked up.

On a branch extending in front of her, a green bamboo snake as thick as half her wrist was slowly approaching, its tongue flicking out.

In the apocalypse, she had dealt with more dangerous versions of these creatures.

The sight of this naturally venomous snake, with its menacing head and unsettling eyes, seemed almost docile to her.

She secured the bamboo tube, opened the bamboo basket at her waist, and effortlessly grabbed the snake by the head, pulling it down and throwing it into the basket, then tightly closing the lid.

She had brought this special snake-proof bamboo basket with her, and it had come in handy.

Liang Hongyu's main goal in entering the mountains was to find some herbs.

She searched around areas with streams but couldn't find the specific herbs she wanted.

Instead, she gathered some herbs that could treat injuries from falls.

With only a third of the water left in her bamboo tube, she found herself deep in the mountains.

Beyond this point was another connected mountain range, with difficult paths, so she decided to head back before noon.

As she retraced her steps, she suddenly heard a distant thumping sound, as if something was forcefully striking the trees.

Curious, Liang Hongyu stopped to listen and then followed the sound.

The thumping sound grew louder.

She pushed aside the bushes that was blocking her view and saw a tree about the size that one person could hug.

Its base was covered with wood chips, and leaves mixed with wood fragments were falling down.

About three meters up the tree trunk, a tall, strong black bear was violently pounding the tree.

A swarm of bees buzzed around its head, attacking it.

The black bear's powerful strikes had left the tree trunk riddled with holes.

It smashed the tree a few more times, then shoved its mouth into the hollow it had made.

Unable to reach inside, it pulled back and continued to gnaw and claw at the opening.

The black bear's keen hearing quickly detected Liang Hongyu before she could even settle into place.
