The first day at the academy did not go as she expected. According to Rezef, at 10 years old, angel kids got into the academy and trained as whatever the Base chose for them according to their personality.
Alex was a guardian angel and Theo a warrior angel. It was decided way too fast for them, said Ruman. When they went there, two professors shrieked at the sight of them. One professor's face went pale. And another simply stared at them.
"I don't know what you two have done, but this isn't normal," Daisy said. Rezef and Daisy stuck to them. Alex was grateful for it.
"It's because of their sister," Rezef said. "They must know about her."
"Do everyone?" Alex asked fearfully. It was bad enough to have the professors behave that way. If the other angels started acting that way too, Alex was not sure she would be able to bear it.
Rezef shook his head. "They have nothing to do with it. I suppose there are rumor, but no one knows anything for certain."
"We are not telling," Daisy said pointedly as if Alex accused her.
The academy was huge. If Alex was not feeling so down, she would have loved to explore it. She usually hated huge place. But for so many people, it was perfect, unlike their mansion which was too much for only three people, occasionally four.
She and Theo separated and were told they would be trained separately. Rezef was also a guardian angel. So, he and Alex went together, while Daisy went with Theo. Ruman was a scholar angel.
"What does a scholar angel do?" Alex asked Rezef as he showed her around.
"You see, we need to create weapons, new books and so on. Scholar angels manage these things," Rezef explained. "Warrior angels fight against demons. As for you and me, we watch over humans."
"Watch over all the humans?"
"No. A particular one. You can choose if you wish to," Rezef said.
"Who do you watch over?"
"No one. We will get to choose later. I am still being trained."
Rezef led her to the library, then to the garden. Alex was never fond of books, so she did not find the library as fascinating as Nes would have found. Thinking about Nes hurt. No matter what she did, she was still Alex's sister. Alex could not just hate her.
Alex liked the garden. There were blue roses
Alex liked the garden. There were blue roses there, which were her favorite.
"You love flowers?"
"Yes. Blue roses and dandelions," Alex said.
"But I saw no flowers in your yard. I mean, it was big enough for a garden and being as rich as-"
"That's Nes's mansion, not mine," Alex said. "Our grandpa left it to her."
"Why not to you three?"
"I don't know. I guess he liked Nes more," she shrugged. "Nes hates flowers. Rather than hate, I think she finds them insignificant. That's why she never let me have a garden. Besides, she thought in the end, the plants will just die because of my carelessness."
"Wow, your sister- she was quite controlling," Rezef said.
"You can say that." Calling her controlling was an understatement. Nes wanted everything to go her way. She would do anything to have everything run the way she wanted.
One time, Alex did not come home before ten even though Nes told her to. It was twelve. She was fourteen then. Nes did not open the door and kept all the windows locked. Alex had to spend the night in her car.
It was a little strange how both Theo and Alex were a little afraid of Nes, though none of them would admit it. They were of the same age. It would be embarrassing. However, all of them knew it. Especially Nes.
But then again, Nes was always there for them. She hit a boy with a frying pan who kept following Alex home and would not stop banging on the front door. She then picked up Theo from his football practice when it was raining even though she had high fever.
Perhaps she was overbearing, but without her, Alex was not certain if their lives would run as smoothly as it did. Until the angels appeared and ruined everything.
Alex was surprised how she was not as bothered by the fact that her sister killed two people as she thought she would be, or she should be.
It made her feel ashamed of herself.
"Hey, you okay?" Rezef asked, placing his hand on her arm.
"Yeah. Fine," she said quickly.
"I don't have any siblings, so I don't know how close you all might be. But really, it must be hard for you without your sister," he said.
"Kind of, yes," she said. She did not want to talk about Nes anymore. "What about your family? Tell me about yourself since you seem to know almost everything about myself."
"Well, I lived with humans, as some angel parents want their kids to experience what humans her first hand. Before, it was not possible. But since the last 200 years, this practice has become kind of common. My parents left me with two humans, husband and wife, when I was 10. They controlled their minds so they adopted me without any question. My parents visited me frequently so I never forgot who I was. Last year, they brought me here," he said.
"Then what about your adoptive parents? Do they know the truth?" she asked.
Rezef shook his head, his eyes were sad. "They think I died. They even buried a body."
"Whose body?"
"I don't know. My parents said they took care of it."
"But isn't that cruel?"
"Angels are not cruel. They have a reason for what they did."
Alex could not agree. In her eyes, it was only cruel for the human parents to be forced to go through the pain of losing their son. Were angels not supposed to be kind and considering?
