Chapter 42: A Chilling End

Xu Wenhan immediately called the police, and soon, security officers arrived to investigate.

However, when he opened the package again in front of the security officers, his heart nearly stopped—

—there was nothing inside.

He insisted to the officers that there had indeed been a severed hand in the package, but they didn't believe him. Before leaving, they warned him that false alarms would bring unnecessary trouble.

Xu Wenhan stood on the balcony, watching the security officers drive away, feeling distressed. When he turned around, he saw Guo Xiaoyun standing at the bedroom door, looking unwell.

He was about to comfort her but froze. He realized that the hand he'd seen in the package looked like his girlfriend's hand.

Xu Wenhan tried to convince himself it was just an illusion, a result of his nerves being on edge, but the feeling lingered.

He started feeling more uneasy and distant. He used to want to be with his girlfriend all the time, but now he felt relieved when they were apart.

He couldn't sleep at night. The feeling of Guo Xiaoyun lying next to him made his skin crawl. Several times, he woke up trembling, feeling like she was staring at him in the dark with a strange smile and blood at the corners of her mouth like lipstick.

But whenever he turned to look, she was just sleeping peacefully, breathing steadily.

He couldn't sleep, no matter what.

It was then that Xu Wenhan remembered Dr. Li. He recalled the doctor's strange reaction the day Guo Xiaoyun was discharged, as if he wanted to say something but couldn't.

The next morning, Xu Wenhan lied to Guo Xiaoyun about meeting a classmate and went straight to the hospital to find Dr..

Dr. Li remembered him and ushered him into his office, closing the door behind them.

Xu Wenhan was anxious and asked directly, "Doctor, do you know if there's something wrong with Yunyun?"

Dr. Li nodded solemnly, making Xu Wenhan nervous. He was ready to hear the worst, but Dr. Li hesitated.

Finally, Dr. Li said, "She's fine."

Xu Wenhan was confused. "Fine?"

"Yes, she's fully recovered. If she seems weaker, that's normal. She's okay."

Xu Wenhan felt even more confused. The doctor's serious demeanor and secrecy just to tell him everything was normal didn't make sense.

But he realized that Dr. Li was hiding something when he noticed the doctor glancing nervously at the door. Following his gaze, he saw a pale face peering through the small window—Guo Xiaoyun.

Startled, Xu Wenhan asked, "Why are you here?"

Guo Xiaoyun blinked slowly and said, "The doctor asked me to come for a re-examination today. Is that right, doctor?"

Dr. Li hesitated before nodding. "Yes, that's correct."

Xu Wenhan felt a chill run down his spine. The doctor's reaction was unsettling. He decided to take Guo Xiaoyun home and planned to return the next day to speak with Dr. Li alone.

However, the next day, he was told that Dr. Li hadn't come to work. Xu Wenhan tracked down the doctor's address, only to learn that he hadn't returned home the previous night. Dr. Li was missing.

Xu Wenhan was gripped by fear. He felt trapped and helpless.

The following day, another package arrived. With trembling hands, Xu Wenhan opened it. This time, it contained a leg—one that looked disturbingly like Guo Xiaoyun's.

Terrified, Xu Wenhan ran to the Public Security Department to report the case again. The Ninth Branch of the Secret Service, which handled mysterious incidents, was assigned the case.

Agents Chu Cheng and Felix were tasked with investigating. After reading the details he felt uneasy. Regardless of the truth, the story was chilling.

Chu Cheng arrived early at the restaurant where he was supposed to meet Felix. He was led to a luxurious private room, where he waited for Felix. Half an hour passed, and Felix still hadn't shown up.

Meanwhile, Felix was speeding through the city in a blue supercar. The blond maid driving glanced at him. "Weren't you supposed to have dinner with a colleague tonight?" she asked.

Felix, flipping through documents in the back seat, replied, "Yes. Uncle always says to build good relationships with colleagues. I invited a new colleague to dinner."

The maid asked cautiously, "So, aren't you going?"

Felix gave a puzzled look. "I've already invited him. What more should I do?"

The maid was speechless.
