Chapter 4: Families and Talents

I slowly walked walked towards a room on the second floor of my house and soon I arrived and knocked on the door.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

The noise resounded in the quiet area quickly followed by me opening the door. There I found a man greeting me.

"Welcome young master, as I said in my previous lesson you won't be learning anything today but instead doing a test I made to check your progress".

The man who greeted me was my tutor, he's been teaching since last year when I was 4 years old and taught me geography, history and some common knowledge of this world. Unlike my previous world of Earth, the current world I live in is much bigger. Although there are only 3 continents they are extremely big. The human continent Arcadia is about 2.5 times larger than Africa from my former world Earth, the other continents are about the same size.

I nod my head at the tutor and sit down in my seat, the tutor quickly gives me the test and I begin answering it. The test isn't all that hard, in fact it's quite simple. There are questions about the five royal families and the eleven ducal families on the continent. The title of royal and ducal is just a method to display a family's status. For example, the Gremory family I belong to is one of the five royal families, although we are a royal family we aren't literally royalty. It's a form of status instead as there are no kingdoms in the human continent unlike the non-human continent.

However, the top families do have subordinate families like mine who has two ducal families who have sworn allegiance to us. The other ducal families have sworn allegiance to the other royal families while some haven't sworn allegiance to anyone. The ducal rank is followed by Marquis ranked families as well which then is followed by commoners. There are other questions on the test as well but they are not noteworthy.

I finish answering the test within 30 minutes and headed out the room.

'Status window'

Name: Lazarus Azrael Gremory

Talent: Photographic Memory, Appraisal, Devour ( Uses: 1 ), Calm Mind, Teleport

Rank: F+

Str: F+

Int: E-

Sta: F+

Agi: F

Def: F

Mana: D

I have gone up by a sub-rank and got more talents during the past few years.

Calm Mind:

You will stay calm at all times no matter the situation as the talent is passive, but there is a side effect where your emotions will be numbed down.

Teleport:

You can create a portal to move around, as your proficiency increases with the talent the distance and speed of teleportation will increase.

These talents are very convenient, especially the 'Calm Mind' which would be vital in battles and in other scenarios. Although the side effect will make me seem a bit emotionless or indifferent it still is a very desirable talent to have. Also passive talents like 'Calm Mind' don't require any mana. Then there is 'Teleport' which is also amazing for movement and can allow me escape from dangerous situations. I have been doing my best training with it in order to increase my proficiency. As far as I know, the mana cost depends on the size of the portal, how long I maintain it for and how far I want to teleport. When I teleport people won't even be able to see the portal, instead they will see me just vanish and re-appear in another place.

Oh speaking of, I haven't told you how you get talents have I? Okay so usually everyone awakens a talent at the age 10. This means everyone is guaranteed to manifest at least one talent. The more talents one awakens depicts the extent of their talent, but what talent one awakens is also important as you can awaken two talents but those two talents are high ranked.

Yes, talents also are ranked. So my 'Teleport', 'Appraisal' and 'Photographic Memory' are all high tier. Whereas, 'Calm Mind' would be considered mid tier. Usually, offensive and defensive talents are the most common among the high tier talents. The tiers are determined by the rarity of the talent, utility in battle and power.

Anyways, you can awaken a talent before the age of 10, these people are considered talented as the earlier you awaken a talent, the more likely you are to awaken more in the future. Those who awaken their first talent at 10 can awaken another talent between age 10 - 15 but it's less likely to happen for them compared to those who awaken earlier. BUT absolutely no one can awaken talents after the age of 15.

I soon reached my room, teleported on to the bed and entered a deep sleep.
