The basilisk

"Ready for a last battle?"

"I hope it is."

As they cautiously approached the boss room, an eerie silence settled around them. The imposing doors of the chamber loomed ahead, etched with ancient symbols that seemed to pulse with dark energy. Caedes and Lilith exchanged a resolute glance, their earlier tensions temporarily forgotten in the face of the challenge that awaited them.

With a deep breath, Caedes pushed open the heavy doors, and they stepped into the dimly lit room. The air was thick with an oppressive aura, and the flickering torches cast long, wavering shadows across the stone walls.

At the center of the chamber, coiled in a menacing stance, lay the one they needed to kill. The boss, a massive basilisk. Its scales shimmered with a sickly red hue, and its eyes glowed with an otherworldly malice.

The basilisk reared its head, hissing loudly as it sensed their presence. Its gaze fixed on them, "Don't look at it's eyes. A single contact of the eye could turn you into stone-" Caedes felt a chill run down his spine.

"Lilith, we need to distract it," Caedes whispered urgently. "We can't let it look directly at us."

Lilith nodded, her expression steely. She summoned her crimson-colored rods, the energy crackling in the air around her.

With a swift motion, she hurled one of the rods at the basilisk, aiming for its eyes. The creature roared in pain and fury as the rod struck its mark, momentarily blinding it.

Caedes seized the opportunity and charged forward, his short sword gleaming in the dim light. He aimed for the basilisk's vulnerable underbelly, the so-called reverse scale.

Hoping to inflict a decisive blow, however, the creature was quicker than he anticipated. With a swift flick of its tail, it knocked Caedes off balance, sending him sprawling to the ground.

"Theodore!" Lilith cried out, her voice filled with concern.

He struggled to his feet, his sword still clutched tightly in his hand. "I'm fine," he grunted, his determination unshaken. "Just keep it distracted!"

Lilith continued to launch her energy rods at the basilisk, each strike causing it to thrash and roar in agony. The creature's movements became more erratic, and Caedes saw his chance. He lunged forward once more, aiming for a weak spot near its neck.

But as he brought his sword down, the basilisk twisted its body with surprising agility. Its powerful jaws snapped shut around Caedes' weapon, and with a sickening crunch, the blade shattered into pieces.

Caedes stared at the broken hilt in his hand, a sense of despair washing over him. "Damn it!" he cursed under his breath. Without his sword, their chances of defeating the basilisk seemed slim.

"Get back!" Lilith shouted, her voice tinged with desperation.

He leapt backwards just in time to avoid the basilisk's snapping jaws. The creature was relentless, its fury intensified by the wounds on its body. Caedes knew they had to think of something quickly, or they would be overwhelmed.

"Lilith, listen to me," he called out, his mind racing. "We need to work together. I'll distract it, and you go for its eyes again. We need to blind it completely."

Lilith hesitated for a moment, fear flickering in her eyes. But she nodded, her resolve firm. "Okay. Just be careful."

Caedes nodded back, determination etched on his face. He grabbed a broken piece of his sword, using it as a makeshift dagger. With a deep breath, he charged at the basilisk once more, dodging its tail and moving around its saliva-filled jaws. He slashed at its sides, each striking a desperate attempt to keep the creature's attention on him.

Meanwhile, Lilith gathered her energy, focusing on the basilisk's glowing eyes. She waited for the perfect moment, her heart pounding in her chest. When the creature lunged at Caedes, leaving its eyes exposed, she seized the opportunity.

"Now!" Caedes shouted, his voice echoing through the chamber.

Lilith hurled her rods with all the might she could, each one aimed precisely at the basilisk's eyes. The creature let out a deafening roar as the rods struck true, its vision completely obscured. It thrashed wildly, its movements frantic and uncoordinated.

Caedes saw his chance. With the basilisk blinded, its movements were erratic and less dangerous. He darted forward, using his makeshift dagger to strike at its reverse scale. Each strike weakened the creature further, and Caedes could feel the tide of the battle slowly turning in their favour.

But the basilisk was not defeated yet. In its blind rage, it lashed out with its tail, catching Caedes off guard. The force of the blow sent him crashing into the wall, pain radiating through his body.

He struggled to his feet, his vision was blurry, but he refused to give up.

Lilith's voice cut through the haze of pain. She was by his side, helping him to stand. "We can't give up now."

He nodded, his determination renewed.

With Lilith's support, Caedes steadied himself. The basilisk was still thrashing about, but its movements were slower, its strength waning. They needed to deliver a final, decisive blow.

"Lilith, we need to aim for its heart," Caedes said, his voice urgent. "It's the only way to end this."

She nodded, her eyes filled with resolve. "I'll create an opening. Be ready."

Caedes watched as Lilith summoned all her remaining energy, her rods glowing with an intense light. She hurled them at the basilisk, each one acting like chains binding its body with pinpoint accuracy. The creature roared in agony, its defenses weakening.

Caedes gripped the broken hilt of his sword, his heart pounding in his chest. He glanced at Lilith, who was summoning the last of her strength to keep the basilisk at bay. The creature was wounded and blinded, but it was still a formidable opponent.

"Lilith, keep it distracted for a little longer!" Caedes shouted, his voice filled with urgency.

Lilith nodded, her face set in determination. She launched another barrage of energy rods at the basilisk.

Caedes closed his eyes, focusing on the power within him. He could feel the blood rushing through his veins, the primal hunger, the urge to kill, everything.

It was time to change. Somewhere deep inside him, a shadow smiled.

'It's finally time.'
