Chapter twenty six

The opulent bed, a symbol of marital bliss, stretched before me, mocking the turmoil within. Forced to share this chamber with Damian, a man I barely knew and deeply distrusted, was not how I envisioned my wedding night. "Awkwardness" and "distance" were mere understatements for the chasm that separated us. Stealing glances at his still figure across the room, I yearned for the solitude of my thoughts.

"Don't worry," Damian spoke abruptly, his voice breaking the suffocating silence. "I won't strangle you in your sleep." He chuckled a dry, humorless sound. "Just relax."

My lips twitched into a strained smile. "I'm perfectly relaxed," I countered, my voice laced with a forced lightness. Turning my back to him, I added, "Come over here and help me unzip this dress, would you? My arms are suddenly feeling rather useless."
