"What? Matthew MacKenzie is back in the States?" Lauren asked her two best friends, her voice laced with hope.

It had been a tumultuous time for Lauren. In the midst of her ongoing legal battle with Rayleigh, the hospital had decided to put her on suspension. It was not entirely clear whether this suspension would ultimately lead to her termination, but the mere prospect was enough to send a blast through her life.

Lauren knew that the suspension would make it nearly impossible for her to find employment at any major hospital or healthcare institution in New York, or even in other large cities across the United States. Her only viable option would be to seek work in smaller, more remote areas, far from the bigger cities.
