The Chase

pieces of broken dishes crunches under my feet as I walked awkwarly through the living room. As I stepped into the next room, my mother began to talk restlessly and angrily about something..my dad answered her with the same intonation, bordering on hatred.

I refused to believe that they could throw him in poison...but not because he didn't deserve it. Mostly because long prison sentences seemed like a weird graveyard that your relatives don't belong in...

I went to my room, still listening to the conversation in the living room. But a small movement at the window distracted me from my family quarrels.to

A shadow spun around, pacing back and forth as if waiting to be allowed in. I came closer, right up the window, trying to see what was out there. Round frightened eyes stared at me.

The pupils almost absorbed the iris, leaving only a thin yellow rim of color.

"Meow!"

My heart skipped a beat. "Ah, it's a kitty! What are you doing here?" It was probably cold outside, and I hurriedly opened the window, letting the animal in. I walked across the room, turning on the lights and returned to the cat.

She spun again, chasing her tail. "Like a little dog." She has a smooth black fur, almost iridescent—at a certain angle it looks almost brown. I wanted to pet her, but she hissed and raised her paws in warning.

"Hisss!"

"Alright, OK—i'm not gonna touch you." I paused them looked at the cat more intently. "Wait a minute...I've seen you before... you're Mrs. Hill's cat!" I couldn't exactly when I saw any other animals in the antique shop, other than the dog. Nevertheless, I was confident that the cat belongs to Mrs. Hill.

"Meow?" She tilted her head, confused.

"Yes, you." The cat spun again, this time stomping in place with it's paws and preparing to go to sleep, and then lay down and curled up in a circle. "Well, you can spend the night here, but tomorrow I will take you back to Mrs. Hill."

It ignores me. I took a shower and set my alarm. My little guest was already snuffling at the hedge of the bed. And although the cat clearly didn't have any sympathy for me, feeling it warmth made it easier to fall asleep.

I slept peacefully and before I knew it, it was already bright. I heard loud voices. My parents began to quarrel again in the morning. I went out to meet them. Mom's face was paled and haggard—her eyes swollen from tears and sleepiness.

In order not to disturb her further, I decided to trek to school. At first I walked at a leisure pace, enjoying the fresh air, which happens only in the morning.

I thought about my parents. "What will happen to us if Dad is sent to prison? He'll probably need a lawyer...But we don't have the money for it—no way in hell."

A thought popped into my head, and it doused me like cold water. "To avoid prison dad's gonna spend all of his savings, and we'll be stuck here in Saintfour forever!" And I immediately felt guilty. "Bah. I only think about myself, what about dad?"

My attention was all over the place... My leg walked automatically, and my eyes didn't notice the houses and the road—only the rushing thoughts in my head. But suddenly I startled and froze, peering intensely into the distance....

The end of the street is covered In an impenetrably fog, and there was something serious abnormal and unnatural about it. It was curling. Moving. Getting thicker. The mist swallowed houses and cars after if they were falling into the abyss, dissolved into the white darkness.

Unconsciously, I took a few steps back, feeling that I shouldn't enter it. Silhouettes appeared in the fog, clearer and more tangible than the approaching field of grey.

"What the...?" Something moved forward, and then a wolf's face, twisted in a grin, came out of the fog.

"Rrrrr!" Yellow teeth were colored red from blood, scarlet drops stood out brightly against the grey haze around. Blood ran down the gums of the animal and dripping onto the ground.

I was shocked frozen. The wolf took a couple of steps towards me. It's eyes were black, just like Sam's, with no pupils, and yet I knew that it was looking at me.

Furry turts hund all over it body, pieces of naked bleeding flesh were visible here and then the wolf smelled of rot and decaying flesh. I felt nauseous. I backed away from it, trying not to screen. It's common sense that they attack in packs.

VRROOM!

Just when it wanted to leap at me I heard of a sound of acceleration of a car. At the sound of the loud, wheezing motor, I turned around sharply, for a second even forgetting about tge wolf next to me.

The bright headlights blinded me and I jumped to the side, and the car, screeching wheels, rushed forward. It flashed a millimeter away from me, and drove right through the wolf, as if they were part of the fog. The air filled with the smell of burnt rubber.

The noise of the car engine faded, and the wolf was nowhere to be seen, but the feeling of something terrible approaching intensified. The fog was blinding. It was everywhere, dense, snow-white and dangerous.

VRROOM!

"Who are you?!" I asked, trying to get an answer from the person driving. The car started to approach again, gaining speed. Cutting through the fog, it flashed it's headlight. yellow at first, and then they seemed to turn to a bloody colour.

The huge front bumper resembles the mouth of a beast ready to tear me apart. I rushed along the road, not yet realizing that the car was chasing me. The pickup was a mere thirty yards away and continued to accelerate. I had to constantly dodge in order not to fall under the wheels. I heard them spinning, getting closer and closer... The pickup scraped against someone fence, and it fell to the ground.

The truck was old and rusty. Every time the driver switched gears, it made sound similar to that of a dying animal.
