I could see the sympathy in his eyes. He gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "I understand, Laurene. It's okay to be confused and hurt. It's okay to not know what to do. But remember, whatever decision you make, I'll support you."

His words were comforting but didn't ease the pain in my heart. Still, I was grateful for his understanding and support. For now, that was enough.

"Thank you, Zaiden," I said softly, managing a small smile. "I really appreciate it."

He returned my smile. "Anytime, Laurene. I'm always here for you."

He looked away, and I saw a flash of pain in his eyes. It was quick, but I caught it. His usually kind eyes looked sad, like he was trying to hide something.

His jaw was tight, like he was trying to keep his feelings under control. His smile, which was usually so natural, seemed forced. His hands, normally steady, were clenched on the steering wheel.
