The dim lighting of the candle gently illuminated the hall as two individuals sat there with silence. One was a young girl while the other was a man with a curly mustache. The atmosphere between them wasn't that pleasant when bystanders looked at their table.
" Saintess, I don't know why you are refusing our request but you have to understand this is for the greater benefit of our people. We are surrounded by Northern barbarians, Hungarian killers, Frank bastards, Latin nobles, and Heretic conquerors. They wouldn't bathe their eyes before killing our men. Do you want that to happen?"
The man slashed his tender meat with his silver knife, chewing it carefully while tasting his blood-red wine.
The saintess glared at him with a cold look while sipping her water. Unlike him, she was eating sourdough bread and jam, so there was no extra luxury.
" You talk like you know the best for our people, Lord Marcus. However, what you do is the contrary of your actions. Even though I am young, I am not a fool to believe in such words. I heard your people instigated war on the northern border and tried to conquer Bavarian regions. Do you know how many lambs would be lost? Do you think the Lord will agree with your wish?"
She questioned his decision as one of the leading figures in the church, the situation of the north already reached her ears and she felt horrible when the peaceful north was breached by their politics.
" Their lives are less meaningful to us. As long as we get the northern land, we can create an army that goes beyond the holy land. Our cause is just and pure."
Marcus closed his eyes, swirling his wine in his golden cup while shimmering its aftertaste.
Contrary, the saintess found this behavior rude and got up from her table to go back to her chamber since she had to get up early.
" You may think of them as pawns in your game but you shouldn't say that this is the Lord's will. Your words and actions will lead you to your punishment someday, Lord Marcus."
She said with a serious face, leaving Marcus alone on the table as the latter laughed. He grabbed his knife hard, sticking it into his steak with rage while changing his face.
" Anthony! Do your part with silence. I will take care of the head nun and don't alert the knights and paladins."
He whispered softly under his breath, looking at the setting sun with a gloomy face. The crimson rays of the sun and curtain of the moon reached his face, masking his venomous heart behind his mask so-called face.
" I understood, my lord."
The knight left the hall promptly as other knights followed their steps to the quarters of the saintess. The holy woman was protected by the elites of the church but in front of Marcus who led the imperial army as one of the spears, they were measly knights with lofty attitudes.
" Oh, Saintess Anna. You should have accepted my offer peacefully. Now because of your stupidity, blood is going to be spilled in this holy place. Pity, but necessary. May the Lord understand my will."
He got up from his seat, silently drawing his sword from his waist.
Meanwhile in the Saintess Quarter.
The head nun frowned when she looked at the men of Lord Marcus. Although she was adamant about refusing his arrival, the saintess agreed with him since he was one of the most important generals in the imperial army.
" I don't like it, Lydia. Lord Marcus is a beast rather than a human. I know our saintess is kind but I have a bad feeling about this."
She was worried about those mean-looking knights who were standing outside the church with torches in their hands.
" Oh, sister Evangeline, they are just knights. I don't think Lord Marcus would be foolish enough to rebel against the authority of the church."
Sister Lydia calmed her down to ensure everything was alright because the church had huge influence and power in the power dynamics, so even the imperial family wouldn't dare to touch them without cause.
" I really hope so, but I still got that icky feeling from him. He was looking like a predator who was looking at his prey."
She shook her head with anxiety.
