Balance.
"Our universe and everything in it was created and is currently maintained through perfect balance" lectured professor McLean,"Now, ever since the 'New Day' Event also known as the rupture according to chris... Yes Nick?"
At the back of the class, the seat in the corner towards the teachers right was occupied by a dark haired boy, who had been raising his hand for a while until the teacher had given him chance to speak.
Smiling to himself, he was a bit satisfied having disrupted the lesson even for a bit. It fed his ego. However, his antics didn't go unnoticed by the teacher "If I'm not mistaken" he began, "you mentioned 'perfect balance' in you're explanation, correct?"
Exasperated, McLean had her face cupped in her hands. "The fourth freaking time this period," she muttered.
"I did Nick, is there anything wrong my statement?" She said to him across the class. Everyone was Now paying attention to their exchange. It was always a spectacle to see these two go at it. A battle of wits, if you can call it that.
"Perfect." he thought.
"Everything actually" Nicholas Barclay said smiling, now standing from his seat, "Perfect balance means more and less, right? White and black, good and evil et cetera however, the universe is everything but perfect balance"
Laura McLean had no time and energy for this battle, they've already gone over it several times. "Please provide further support to you're argument Mr Barclay" she said regarding him with her head hanging to the her right letting her auburn hair fall.
"Ofcourse" Nick said in a mock tone, "In the beginning there was just darkness. No light just darkness and according to your statement there was both light and darkness which I strongly disagree wit..."
"Boooooringgggggg" Lucas said aloud interrupting Nick.
Everyone in the room turned there heads to ginger haired boy who was the source of the comment. He sat with his feet on his desk, rocking his chair while spinning his pen. It was so fast that little sparks were formed everytime he changed the direction of the pen.
"Take Lucas for example" McLean explained, "Gifted with the power of lightning and electric current but not that gifted in class."
"Hey!" Lucas yelled slightly offended. At this point he was now used to it.
"I don't think you got my point," argued Nicholas.
"I did actually you were about to bring up the point that light can not exist with out a source and that how darkness is just simply the lack of light right?" Said McLean while stacking her text books.
"But according to the books, light and darkness appeared at the exact same time, see perfect balance" she said while walking towards the door, "what was there before? No idea I don't have all the answers."
"Take everyone in this room" she continued, "we all have something that makes up for what we have missing better example, you, you were born with the gift of knowledge, charm and you're kinda handsome but you lack an ability which is fair game for all the other guys."
The bell rang and Professor McLean made her escape "saved by the bell." Mumbled Nicholas as he too packed his books.
On his way out of class, a loud cracking sound catching everyone's attention was heard. On the ground Nicholas had a good view of Lucas' basketball sneakers. "That's what you get for trying make a fool out of me."
He felt a warm liquid run down his side. The pain was intense. Ignoring it, he got up as fast as he could and and made a fist intending to throw a punch.
He pulled back his arm ready to through it at the person in front of him. Another cracking sound was made, a large lightning bolt danced across the floor seemingly drawing a line between the two boys.
A tall, extremely handsome dark haired boy walked into the room nonchalantly "What's with the look in you're eyes Nick?" He said looking down at him.
Nick wasn't the tallest of people. Pretty much average height or a little shorter. So between the two boys he looked like a little kid as they towered over him.
"The defiance in you're eyes" Edward said practically breathing on Nicks face, "It's almost as if you think you have a chance."
Nicholas Barclay never runs from a fight. Well atleast he tries. He knows when it's useless, when the odds are stacked too high against him. He wasn't stupid.
He stared at the couple intensely, his Grey eyes flickering from right to left. Assessing. He absorbed the information. Reading their body languages. 'They are ready for a scuffle' he thought,'It won't be like last time when they underestimated me.'
Biting his tongue, he in walked between the two boys and left the room. 'He's got balls' someone from the class commented. Walking through the halls of Oak Tree Educational Institution, the pain became a bit more bearable. He didn't even consider going to the sick bay because he knew how useless it was.
"Those two." He muttered.
When he left the building, he began walking in the direction of the House of Rainbow. Almost everyone in the world had a faction to which they belonged Nick's happens to be the House of Rainbow.
The House of Rainbow is a non-profit organisation owned by an adventurer who was really successful during his era. He spent his fortune on a faction for orphans which, in this case, was the House of Rainbow.
Nick walked into a convenient store near his house and decided to buy some bandages and a drink with the little money he had.
"Those sky kids still bothering you?" The store owner asked. He was old and noticed Nick coming to buy first aid supplies every week or so.
"Yeah kinda" he confessed.
"D'you give em hell?" The store owner asked.
"Yeah," he lied.
"Gotten pretty strong haven't you," the store owner said playing along.
Nick watched his eyes, they were old and sad, he could tell he'd seen a lot through out his life. But they were still alive.
"I ran away, they put me in a tight spot," he confessed.
"Well atleast you have that going for you" the shop owner said,"you're not stupid, you know when to quit. I know some that would've stayed out of pride and received the beating of their lives"
"But sometimes a ..." Nick wanted to argue.
"Sometimes a man's gotta be man" the shop owner finished for him "but remember only when it's necessary, pick you're fights"
"Thanks Dick," Nick said.
Richard smiled,"It's Richard to you kid."
He always felt comfortable with the store owner specifically for this reason. He had years of experience in worms and he'd seen it all. The life experience of a thousand years he'd say. Nick said he's goodbyes and left with he's purchased items.
Leaving the store a man wearing a hood stopped him.
"Hey kid, heads or tails?" The man asked.
"Hey I'm sorry but I'm kind of in a rush." Nick said.
"Come on just play the game, it'll be quick" he said.
In all honesty Nick saw no problem with it, he sighed,"Heads."
And the man tossed the coin. It went extremely high,"Hey isn't that a little too high?" Nick asked.
But the man just stared at the coin flying high spinning very quickly, "My Gods Nicholas" the man mumbled.
"Excuse me?" Nick was a bit confused he had never met this man in his life.
"Sorry" he looked at Nicholas with his red pupils now smiling,"I guess it had to have been someone like you" the man finished handing him a book.
Upon laying hands on it, Nicholas passed out.
