The zombies at the forefront of the charge were the lowest level, their bodies slamming heavily against the high walls, but the thick wall structure remained unfazed. The zombies in front were quickly compressed into a pulp by those swarming from behind. Subsequent waves stepped on the bodies of those before them, pushing forward relentlessly.
Thus, layer upon layer of zombies piled up, with the ones behind climbing over those in front, stacking higher and higher.
"They really are using that method!" Maxwell muttered to himself from behind a rock, observing the scene covertly.
A twenty-meter-high wall, equivalent to the height of a seven-story building. For the zombies, it would take at least a thousand piled up to reach the height of the wall.
Seeing this, Maxwell felt it was a pity. He couldn't help but think that these thousand or more zombies used for stacking could be a substantial fortune for him, enough to create a mutant zombie.
"Stop dawdling! Go in front and bring those zombies back for me!" Maxwell sent the newly matured Level 10 zombie to work. Eva, however, he kept by his side.
After a while, the Level 10 male zombie returned, carrying several zombies. Maxwell unceremoniously collected these zombies into his space, turning them into his own zombie tools before sending them back out to work under the lead of the Level 10 male zombie.
So it was that, while the zombie horde crazily attacked the base city, Maxwell quietly amassed a fortune behind the scenes, barely able to contain his glee.
"Oh wow, look at that, they've been at it for half the day and still haven't broken through!"
Maxwell didn't idle; he played with his zombie system while watching the unfolding situation. The zombies, devoid of intelligence, knew only to push forward, climbing the makeshift ladder of flesh and blood to reach the wall, only to be blasted back down by intense gunfire.
This time, Maxwell's attention was caught by a figure.
It was an extraordinarily fast zombie, moving with agility not typical of the others. It quickly climbed the ladder made of zombies and reached the top of the city wall.
"This is definitely a mutant zombie!"
"Done for!" Maxwell thought to himself, feeling a sense of dread.
Sure enough, the zombies behind seemed to receive a command and began continuously climbing up to the high wall.
"No way, no way! Is the base city really going to be breached like this?" Maxwell murmured under his breath.
At that moment, his zombies brought back a fresh batch of zombies. Maxwell quickly fused them into new zombies, his hands mechanically working while his mind focused entirely on the wall.
Although the zombie attack was fierce, the base city launched a vigorous counterattack. Evolvers joined the battle, knocking many zombies off the walls. However, more zombies surged forward, among them several fast mutant zombies.
"It looks like the mutant zombies are all attacking; nothing can stop me now, ha ha!"
Maxwell was decisive, and once he made up his mind, he immediately sprang into action. He was about thirty to forty meters from the tail end of the zombie horde. If he relied only on his zombies to transport back and forth, it would take a lot of effort. Now, he decided to dive directly into the zombie horde to complete his Fusions while the mutant zombies were distracted.
With a Level 10 male zombie for protection, Maxwell wasn't afraid of attacks from the lower-level zombies. With the mutant zombies spread thin, he felt fearless.
Rolling up his sleeves, he got to work!
With that thought, Maxwell directed the Level 10 zombie to clear a path ahead, and soon they reached the rear of the zombie horde. He then set up and started working in earnest.
Maxwell's hands moved quickly; he first subdued the zombies and pulled them into the space, then swiftly confirmed and dragged them for fusion, all in one go!
It seems that those exclusive locked slots are indeed necessary. Given how Maxwell is recklessly speeding through the operations, if Eva were still in a regular slot, she might have been accidentally harmed.
The zombies behind seemed to notice the activity here and started moving towards this area. However, comparatively, more zombies were drawn to the noise of the main zombie army attacking the base city, still charging fiercely towards the base.
The tail end of the zombie horde consisted entirely of very low-level zombies, vast swathes of Level 1 zombies, with hardly any Level 2s because of their low rank. Although Maxwell was fast, his hands were getting numb from the elimination process, and he only managed to get another Level 9 female zombie.
On the male zombie side, he had fused a Level 9 with a Level 6. He had already eliminated over five hundred zombies.
"Eva, come back!"
Maxwell recalled Eva, who was out in the field, back into the space and dragged the newly acquired Level 9 zombie into the slot where she was staying. At the same time, the symbol in the top right corner of Eva's slot immediately changed to 10!
Eva was upgraded to Level 10!
The battle in front continued, still very much in a stalemate, with neither side able to overcome the other.
"You guys had better keep fighting for a while! Don't let the battle tilt one-sided so soon! That way, I can reap a bigger harvest, haha!"
Maxwell watched the ongoing zombie horde with fervent eyes, feeling a surge of excitement. His hands never stopped moving, and he continued eliminating zombies for a while longer when suddenly he heard the sound of a helicopter overhead.
Maxwell quickly looked up and saw an object being dropped from the helicopter high above.
"Damn, a bomb?"
The object fell right in the heart of the zombie horde, not too close to Maxwell, but upon seeing this, he quickly recalled his zombies and swiftly ducked to the ground.
"Boom!"
The bomb exploded! However, this bomb was nothing like what Maxwell had imagined. There was no fiery splatter nor the burning sensation of gunpowder; there was only a powerful shock wave. Under this fierce impact, the zombies were like young seedlings swept away by a violent wind, unable to resist and falling down immediately.
It was a concussion grenade!
The lethality of a concussion grenade is generally moderate, but when thrown into a crowd of zombies, it can disrupt the rhythm of the zombie army's advance. Its impact area is very wide, and its destructive power is significant, capable not only of knocking down zombies but also nearby trees, houses, and other structures. It provides a good buffer opportunity for humans.
After the concussion grenade exploded, it indeed took the zombies a long time to get back up and move forward again. The zombies at the base of the walls, lacking the continuous support from behind, were soon cleared away by the heavy weapons on the walls.
As the zombies regrouped and charged again, they were met with another concussion grenade, causing another disruption in the zombie tide.
Maxwell, having dodged several shockwaves from the grenades in the back, watched as the helicopter departed again. He quickly got up from the ground and released his zombies to start the elimination process anew.
