In the blink of an eye, the number in the upper right corner of Eva's cell changed to 51, and below it appeared a large Chinese character for "five," although it was very crudely written.
Eva had finally reached Tier 5!
Maxwell felt that the long struggle without rest was well worth it!
He released Eva from the space once again.
"Eva! You're now Tier 5! How do you feel? Is there anything you want to say?" Maxwell looked at Eva's delicately beautiful little face, unable to resist teasing her a bit.
Eva stared at him blankly.
Suddenly, Eva took small steps toward Maxwell, then stood opposite him and looked up at him.
What was Eva doing?
Seeing her struggle to look up, Maxwell crouched down to meet her gaze.
Eva then lowered her head again but continued to look at Maxwell, gazing back into his eyes.
She seemed to want to express something, but she was unable to make facial expressions or speak. Only her gaze appeared different from before, hesitant as if she wanted to say something.
What was she trying to express?
"Eva? Do you recognize me?" Maxwell asked.
Eva didn't respond to his question but took a small step forward.
Maxwell looked into Eva's eyes, sensing a faint hint of anticipation. The emotion wasn't clear, but he still noticed it.
Maxwell's eyes wandered as he saw Eva moving very close to him. While he pondered, Eva took another small step forward.
Suddenly, Maxwell seemed to understand what Eva meant.
Maxwell burst into laughter, scooped up Eva, and lifted her into the air, spinning her around.
"Eva, you are so adorable!" Maxwell was very happy.
Eva was just asking for a hug!
Since she couldn't talk or express her emotions, she could only keep moving closer to him.
Maxwell spun around several times holding Eva, then brought her to his chest so her head was level with his. With a slight tilt of his head, he planted a big kiss on Eva's little cheek.
"Eva, you're so adorable!" Indeed, as Eva leveled up, she began to express her own thoughts, and this version of Eva slowly developed her own emotions.
Maxwell held Eva, unwilling to put her down.
After a while, Maxwell suddenly noticed Carline watching them, which made him pause abruptly.
Feeling somewhat embarrassed for reasons he couldn't quite pinpoint, Maxwell hesitated before putting Eva down and then went over to give Carline a hug as well.
After being busy for a day and a night, Maxwell now had three Tier 5 combatants.
As the female zombies leveled up, they became increasingly attractive.
Conversely, the male zombies became more fearsome and hideous.
Maxwell didn't specifically retain any of the male zombies, merely fusing them randomly since they were just used for labor.
Even so, the Tier 5 male zombie in his inventory was a large fellow, over two meters tall, with a face full of tough flesh, blue-skinned and fanged, looking immensely ferocious and terrifying.
Three Tier 5 combatants, plus one Tier 1 mutated female zombie, was the extent of strength Maxwell could currently muster.
The fighter jet was still locked in a stalemate with the giant tree in the sky.
"They've been at it for over an hour now; that tree is incredibly tough!" Maxwell thought.
Indeed, tough! Evolvers are strong, but there are both high and low ranks among them, and the lower ranks are just as afraid of missiles.
Even the current Eva and Carline would be scared, although their astonishing speed meant missiles might not necessarily hit them.
This is the situation when using firearms against evolvers: it's well-known that firearms are powerful, but if they don't hit their target, what use are they?
High-rank evolvers and high-rank zombies can predict the trajectory of firearms and dodge them accurately.
The giant tree in front of him couldn't move, but even so, it managed to block several missiles with its wildly flailing vines. Although the tree sustained damage, its ability to directly confront firearms made it an even more formidable entity.
"If you want to completely exhaust the tree to the point where it has no vines left for defense, the missiles on this fighter jet wouldn't be enough."
"This tree, what is it really? It's too powerful!" Maxwell was very curious.
He hadn't known before that plants could mutate too.
"Something's happening over there!" Suddenly, Maxwell saw a figure stealthily entering the Red Fortress from the light screen in front of him, silently reaching the base of the giant tree and starting to climb up its roots.
This scene was seen by one of Maxwell's zombies.
Maxwell still had two zombies inside the Red Fortress, one was a Level 8 zombie, which was stationed near the palace where the Supreme Academy students were confined. The other one, which Maxwell was observing through now, was lower down.
"Interesting. Using the fighter jet to draw all of the tree's attention, allowing it no time to attend to anything else. A classic strategy of feinting in one direction and attacking another! When it comes to intelligence, humans still have the upper hand. It looks like those people might be rescued any moment now." Maxwell couldn't help but laugh.
The Red Fortress indeed provided Maxwell with great surprises; getting Eva and Carline to Tier 5 meant his trip here was not in vain.
The gains were already substantial! Thinking this, Maxwell felt very pleased, realizing that even if he left now, he wouldn't be at a loss.
Thus, Maxwell was no longer in a hurry. He was extremely curious about this giant tree and what it really was.
The person who had climbed the tree moved intermittently; whenever he stopped, the fighter jet in the sky would unleash a barrage of machine-gun fire on the tree.
Missiles couldn't do much to the giant tree, let alone machine guns. These actions were merely meant to divert the tree's attention.
After another ten minutes, he finally reached the palace.
Although the tree had lifted the palace upward, the palace was not in the tree's crown but rather on a branch in the middle part of the tree.
Maxwell directed the Level 8 zombie to get close to the palace and lie down by a rear window to remain still, providing Maxwell with a view of the interior.
Inside the palace, the students were now utterly listless to the extreme, barely hanging on to life, far from their previously spirited selves. During this time, they were continuously drained by the tree for its nourishment and upgrades, causing each of them to become significantly emaciated.
The person who had climbed the tree reached the outside of the palace, smashed a window, and climbed in from the outside.
