= Sarah POV =
After eating, I washed my dishes in the sink so that Chris didn't have to when she was done with her nap.
A little while later, there was a ring at the door, and I opened it to find a gentleman with a stethoscope and a briefcase on the other side. Turns out Chris had called for the in-house doctor to check up on me.
After sitting me down at the island and taking my temperature and blood pressure, he declared that I still had a high temperature and needed bed rest. I was prescribed two rounds of paracetamol and was provided with a certificate to pass to Heather when I next returned to work.
Just as the doctor was packing up to leave, the door slammed open, and a smartly dressed woman with sunglasses and a wide-brim hat strode.
I slowly stood up, shocked by the sudden intrusion, then froze as I realized who the beautiful pant-suit-wearing woman was.
"Oh! Sarah darling, I didn't know you were here. Where is Christina Love? I hear she is sick! My Baby didn't even bother to tell me she was ill. Can you believe it?" Mrs. Fairfield said, taking off her Gucci sunglasses, tucking them into her red designer nori Enomoto bag, and brushing her straight bangs from her eyes.
"H-Hi Mrs. Fairfield, Chris is-" I started but was cut off as flustered. Chris burst out from her bedroom and stumbled forward, looking at the three of us in her living room.
"Mom?" Chris asked and stood Ridgely as her mother flew across the room and pulled her into a hug.
"Baby! Do you have a cold? Why didn't you say? I will have some ginseng soup sent over right away, my poor baby. You are truly overworking yourself! You never come and see me anymore!" Mrs. Fairfield cooed as she looked her daughter up and down.
"No, Mom, I called the doctor for Sarah, not me. I'm fine, Mom, stop it," Chris groaned and pushed her mom off, looking embarrassed.
"Oh dear me! Is that so?" Mrs. Fairfield said and spun around on her heels, and within the next moment, I was engulfed in an embrace of Feuillage Vert by Miya Shinma. This distinct sense trailed behind the beautiful woman wherever she went, making me think of sunflowers and rainbows.
"My dearest Sarah, your city mama will make sure you get all the ginseng root soup and goji berry smoothies you need," Mrs. . Fairfield purred as she smoothed me into her chest. Pulling back, she beamed down at me brightly, " I can never thank your parents enough for taking such good care of my Christina when I had to go to Paris for business for a year, so rest assured you will always have a home with us! Do you work nearby here, and did you get sick? I can arrange a suite for you to stay in so that you don't have to commute home," Mrs. Fairfield suggested.
I looked wide eyes from Mrs. Fairfield to Chris. What was she talking about? Arrange a suite?
"Oh! Christina didn't tell you?" Mrs. Fairfield laughed and released me, clasping her hands. " Ah, my baby is always too modest. Yes, your godmother, which is me, unofficially, owns these apartments!
So feel free to stay as long as you like; I wouldn't charge family anything. My daughter has a terrible rebellious streak and refuses to stay here for free, but don't be like this iffy little thing of mine; I'll have Yuri arrange a place for you to stay for the night," Mrs. Fairfield said dismissively.
"What?" I gasped, staring in shock at Chris. I knew this apartment was where Chris stayed…but her mom owned the entire complex? Wait a second….she paid rent…to stay at….so does that mean….she is an heir to all of this?
"Wait, Mom…umm. Sarah isn't here just because she works nearby and gets sick at work. Sure, that is the case, but Sarah is also my roommate," Chris explained nervously.
Mrs. Fairfield cocked her head to the side " Oh? In this tiny place? Why didn't you say she needed a place? I have an entire apartment sitting empty just across the corridor," Mrs. Fairfield said and straightened up, a light flicking on in her eyes. " Oh my, oh my, this is delightful, Sarah darling, you must come and see it," Mrs. Fairfield said, spinning back to face me and reaching for my hands.
" Oh darling, you will love it; I'll have Yuri decorate it however you want and -" Before Mrs. Fairfield could grasp my hands, Chris cut in between us as she locked arms with her mother and suddenly started marching her to the door.
"Mom, step off; I mean it; Sarah is staying at my place; she is not available," Chris said as she dragged her mom to the door.
"Oh, but pet, the girl needs a place to stay; I'd be more than happy, really dear, you're being quite unreasonable", I heard her mother say and then was cut off as the door swiftly slammed shut, with the two women outside.
