As Paul listened to Holly's answer, he only felt exasperation, suddenly feeling that it was not as simple as that she was ignorant of the world's dangers; it now seemed like she was gambling with her safety, rolling the dice on his character.

Holly seemed to perceive the situation as if the help Paul had previously provided was a form of charity toward her. This implied that she believed he could have already taken her most valuable possessions by simply not giving her the resources she had earned.

In his mind, such a view in and of itself was ignorant; not only did people value things differently, but that train of thought assumed everyone had the same value system and circumstances. 

From what he understood, she did not seem to think anyone might be a malicious person who did not mind using money as bait to lure her into a false sense of trust.
