Chapter 7

Upon arriving home after a long hectic day all Adina wanted to do was relax. Jasmine had afternoon classes so Adina was all on her own today.

She freshened up and made some ramen. Though she wanted to eat something better she neither had the time nor the energy to make something.

She finished her ramen and studied for an hour. While studying she started feeling lonely so she picked up her phone and texted Fredrick but received disappointment when he didn’t text back after an hour.

It had her think about what Grey had told her. No one is too busy for a text so she texted.

It was true Fredrick wasn’t the only one who doesn’t maintain contact.

Adina also was the same. She had started ignoring Fredrick’s texts because she couldn’t find the will in her to talk to him after happened.

Earlier this January she and Fredrick were on a call. Things were all good until Fredrick told Adina it wouldn’t bother him if they don’t end up marrying in future.

This was a huge blow to Adina as she always saw them getting married. Adina cried that day and threw a tantrum at Fredrick and instead of reassuring Adina that he was wrong and he would marry her, he explained what he said that if circumstances ended up not being in their favor they would part ways.

That was the day Adina started questioning her relationship. She tried reasoning that what he said was logical but couldn’t help feeling overwhelmed.

Was he not as serious about her as she was about him?

Adina always ignored what others had to say about Fredrick. Fredrick was a nerd with the average look but high grades. She and Adina became friends at the beginning of high school and he proposed to her after 2 years.

They both were best friends so Adina thought it would work out since they both understood each other but now she was questioning whether she made the right choice.

Her phone started ringing and she smiled seeing it was Fredrick who was calling her.

“ Hey Babe!”

“ where were you babe? I texted an hour ago”

“ I was eating at the cafeteria. I did saw your text though I called after coming back in the dormitory”

“ couldn’t you text back when you saw my text?”

“ babe I was eating with friends”

Adina wanted to argue with him but instead of arguing with him she argued with her own urge to fight him. ‘ At least he was honest’ that was all she could say to calm herself.

They talked for some time when Fredrick exclaimed that he couldn’t wait to complete his degree and pursue master overseas.

“Hey! What about me?” Adina wished for his reply to change this time. Ever since that day she has been asking him this question and every single time he don’t give her a reassuring answer.

“ we would see what we can do about it babe. I would go overseas you can build your career as well back here”

Adina went quiet and listened to Fredrick gave yet another non reassuring answer.

It wasn’t that she was desperate to get married. All she wanted for him to reassure her that he would be there for her.

When they both were taking entrance exams. Fredrick got into N university as well as the university Adina was currently studying at. He chose N university and since Adina failed to get in there she had to bare a long distance relationship.

‘He never waits for me or try to meet my pace just urges me to catch up to him’ This thought tormented her.

Adina wasn’t a bad student in fact she was a good at studying but she was far from being a nerd.

They both said good byes and Adina got up and pulled out a box from the drawer of her dressing table.

Inside it was a necklace. Her heart got bitter the moment she picked it up.

‘ it can’t be that bad right?’ she thought and got in front of the mirror. Upon wearing it she wanted to cry.

This was the worst things someone can gift their girlfriends as a first gift.

The chain of the necklace was black and the pendant was a red brain which looked zombish.

Did he even try when he was searching online? No wait he asked his friend and she suggested this to him.

This was the first ever gift he ever gave her. Adina was so excited when he told her that he had sent her necklace that she told all her friends about it but upon receiving it she was traumatised.

She and Fredrick had known each other for five fucking years. Half of which they both have dated. Not even once she has ever worn something like this in her life.

But the irony was that when she unboxed it she and Fredrick were on a video-call. She couldn’t bring herself to say she hated it to her guts when it was the first ever thing he had gifted her.

She wore the necklace and smiled at him. Though she had tears in her eyes she pretended they were happy tears and thanked him for the gift.

That night she cried herself to sleep.

“ didn’t I tell you to not wear it Adina” Jasmine entered the room and saw Adina wearing that awful necklace. Jasmine was the master mind behind Adina’s chic fashion sense. Being her elder sister she would never let Adina wear something so bazar even if that was something gifted by her boyfriend.

Jasmine always made sure Adina had the best and she took pride in it. That was why Jasmine hated Fredrick. In her eyes Adina was too good for Fredrick but Adina never listened but now she was the one who was suffering.

“ He should at the very least make some effort. I know you think he is good and that maybe is the truth but Adina you are good too and you deserve someone who puts in effort. Never once have I seen him doing anything to meet your ……”

“ Sis please not now” Adina put down the necklace and made a sour face. She was already messed up and didn’t want to hear her sister nag.

Seeing her little sister’s reluctance Jasmine sighed.

“ have you eaten?” and changed the topic.

Jasmine went to washroom while Adina sat down to iron her clothes. She pulled out a dark blue shirt and paired it with black jeans before laying down on bed.

The night was pretty hot and wind had stopped saying Hi. Only mosquitoes were coming from the window beside Adina’s bed.

Adina was sweaty and were bitten by mosquitoes still she tried to sleep.
