"After I had Daemon go to the orphanage with me that one time after he came back, he never returned."
Evelyn's head was still low as she spoke. Dinaia said nothing in reply, but Evelyn continued talking:
"That time, he didn't seem like someone returning home, and the old staff who used to always be welcoming had been unnatural in their behavior."
Now that she thought back, she could see more clearly. She recalled the old headmistress, disappointment dimming the warm light in her heart.
Faintly, Evelyn could imagine where the money the old headmistress had taken almost ten years had gone. But even if it had been for the orphanage, for the other orphans, she could not accept it.
Maybe there had been no other option, or maybe there had been the possibility to refuse, but in the end, Daemon had been stabbed in the back, and that was a fact that could not be changed.
