Chapter 5
The next morning, I woke up at 7 and started running in our farm after washing my face. Then, I began stretching and took out my bow. It is light; Grandpa said it takes 5kg to draw it.
I practiced drawing it without arrows, then satisfied, I selected a tree and took out some red paint from the storage room at our house. It was dry, but using some water, I drew a target for my practice. I walked 10 meters back and started shooting with practice arrows. They are made entirely of wood, not sharp at all. Father said they were safer, so he made these 25 wooden arrows with soft wood. He told me I could get real wooden arrows after I can hit at least 4 out of 10 shots from 20 meters.
They are not sharp, but they can still injure someone and even knock down some birds.
I started shooting arrows out of my bow. The first arrow hit the tree branch, the second missed completely. Slowly, I began hitting the target drawn on the tree. After 25 shots, I started collecting the arrows and repeated the process. After some time, I went to my sisters and played with them. After having lunch, I tried to study the book that Grandma gave me.
It first introduced me to the mana system. According to the book, the amount of mana in a child is around 5 to 10, depending on the child's talent at birth. The body starts to collect mana from the air and food the child consumes. Around the age of 7, it increases to around 35 to 50 without any practice.
According to the book, the body collects a minimum amount of mana to maintain its functions properly. Therefore, if a person empties their mana, they will feel exhausted.
After reading some theoretical pages, the book taught me how to sense mana. According to the writer, we can't manipulate mana if we can't feel it. Then, it introduced a breathing technique to collect more mana than the minimum amount needed by the body. After that, there were some body exercises for better mana flow in our body.
I started with breathing exercises, but I didn't feel the mana. Then, I continued with body exercises. I got bored after some time and went to my sisters to play with them. This is how I spent my days.
After two weeks of continuous training, I started to feel mana flowing in my body. I tried to manipulate it, but it didn't work. After a month of training, I started to feel the mana flowing in my body, although it was not clear, just a general direction in which the mana was flowing. That was enough for me to start learning basic magic, but then I faced the issue of choosing which magic to learn.
According to the book, everyone has a minimum affinity with every element, so with enough practice, everyone can learn spells of every element.
So, I started reading all the spells in the book to understand them. I didn't have the means to know which elements suited me best; the elemental crystal costs about the price of our entire house with the farm.
Looking at the book, I decided to learn the spell "Spark." It generates a spark of high voltage enough to stun an opponent, but it is a short-range spell. In the first week of learning the spell, I felt a small tingle on my finger and got motivated to continue my training.
After continuous training for three months, I can now stun small animals like rats, chickens, etc. I once tried to stun myself, and I am still fearful of that incident. The hair on my body still stands up thinking about it.
When Father saw that I had learned my first spell in three months, he was very proud of me, and we celebrated by slaughtering a hen in our backyard. He told me to learn how to drain the blood, skin it, and then remove its guts by watching.
I had seen it many times in my previous life, so I was used to it. When all this was done, Luna took it to the kitchen to cook it.
Thinking about my previous life, I was craving chicken soup, so I asked my mom to make some soup from its spine, and she happily complied. It tasted different because we don't have any soy sauce in this world.
Slowly, I learned three magic spells to feel safe, how to use a bow, and other things like how to write in this world's language and number system. In this world, it follows the same logic with multi-digit numbers.
When Mum tried to teach me how to add and subtract, she was shocked at how good I was in maths. She was very happy, and Luna said that I was a genius. I tried not to rush anything in my magic because the concept was new to me, and I am not ready to die just because I didn't follow what was written in the book.
