Chapter 4078: An Attack from Chaos
Although this brief journey beyond the heavens was short, Lin Moyu gained a lot from it. Previously, in the virtual realm, he had nearly been sucked into the outer heavens by a Soul Devourer King a very dangerous situation. If not for the Candle Dragon's intervention, he would likely have died. At that time, he only caught a fleeting glimpse of the outer heavens, and it was the outer heavens of the virtual realm, so he hadn't seen it clearly.
The only thing he knew was that there were countless Soul Devourers outside the heavens, seemingly enveloping the entire world. This time, in the real world, he entered the outer heavens through a rift in the Land of Severed Daos. The Soul Devourers were still innumerable, the last glimmers of light more numerous than the stars. However, he noticed that the Soul Devourers outside the real world were not as active as those outside the virtual realm. Normally, they seemed to be in a semi dormant state, not fully awakened only when stimulated did they awaken. The contrast between the activity in the virtual realm and the quiet in the real world was stark.
From what he saw, Lin Moyu got the sense that these Soul Devourers, wrapping around the world, were not necessarily enemies of the world. It was as if they were protecting this world, but at the same time also restricting it. This feeling was strange he couldn't explain why, it was just an intuition.
Having checked out the rift, he now understood what lay beyond it much simpler than the Great Wilderness. The situation outside the world was actually less complex than within the Great Wilderness.
His undead servants continued to report back, and the map of the Land of Severed Daos became ever more complete. Lin Moyu even stationed multiple undead in the same place at different times, recording the shifting boundaries and changes, gradually forming a dynamic map in his mind. He was searching for a pattern, as the edge of the Land of Severed Daos changed unpredictably. Lin Moyu believed everything in the world had its logic if he hadn't found a pattern, it was only because he hadn't discovered it yet.
More undead servants crossed the edge into the Great Wilderness, giving Lin Moyu an even deeper understanding of that region. With his undead scouts, he could stroll through the Land of Severed Daos as if it were his own garden. The Great Wilderness was vast, so the Land of Severed Daos encircling it was equally immense. Lin Moyu estimated that, at his current pace, it would take months to cross.
A few days later, he saw another rift. This one was only ten meters long and not very wide, but Lin Moyu felt it was even more dangerous than the previous one. The danger came from the space beyond the rift he had no idea what lay on the other side.
He sent an undead servant to investigate. When it was still a hundred meters away, a powerful suction force swept it into the rift. As before, the servant was locked down, all its power nullified, and it was pulled in without resistance. Contact was lost during the transmission, and it took a full ten seconds before the connection was re established. Ten seconds of transmission meant the servant had traveled an immense distance. The link was extremely weak Lin Moyu could barely sense the servant's presence, let alone see through its eyes or control it.
Suddenly, the connection was lost again. Less than a second after the transmission ended, the undead servant was killed, and Lin Moyu's Great Thousand World registered an empty spot proof that the servant could not be revived. He didn't know where the servant had been sent or what killed it. With so little information, he could only guess.
A ten second transmission could mean it was sent to the outer heavens, far from this world. Remembering what the Lord of Power had said about visiting a special place, Lin Moyu guessed it was chaos. The Lord of Power, whether soul or body, could not adapt to chaos and barely survived, especially with battles raging there. The fact that he survived was already extraordinary.
But Lin Moyu's undead, being native to chaos, should have been fine. Yet the servant still died, which meant the danger was not the environment, but something else.
After thinking it over, Lin Moyu decided to try again. He sent another undead servant to the rift, this time attaching a wisp of his own soul to it. As soon as the transmission began, Lin Moyu sensed it this really was chaos. His soul was swept by an invisible wind and instantly annihilated. He had experienced this before his soul was not yet adapted to chaos and couldn't withstand its assault.
Ten seconds later, the undead servant reappeared in his senses, but only for half a second before being killed. This confirmed Lin Moyu's suspicions: it had indeed reached chaos, and his soul could not survive there. Chaos was not peaceful.
He reasoned: "It must be chaos. My soul can't reach it. Chaos is far away, and the transmission takes a long time. When the world first formed, the origin energy of the Great Dao came from chaos our world is within chaos." Lin Moyu pictured the structure of the world: the world was born from chaos, with chaos outside, and between the world and chaos was a vast sea of Soul Devourers. The Soul Devourers acted as a shell, both protecting and restricting the world, making it hard for anything to leave.
Although much of this was speculation, Lin Moyu was confident in his conclusions. The structure of each world inside the universe was similar to chaos itself. The world's mist could be seen as chaotic energy the world seemed to be imitating chaos.
As he pondered this, Lin Moyu suddenly retreated rapidly. A ray of light shot out from the rift like a blade. The rift flared with dazzling brilliance, far brighter than before. Lin Moyu reacted quickly, but not quickly enough the light struck him. The power of death surged into armor, and the power of life flowed within him as a second shield. But the light was too strong; Lin Moyu faintly heard a birdlike cry, then the power of death shattered, the power of life failed, and he was blown to pieces.
Bathed in purple light, Lin Moyu was reborn. The light from the rift faded in less than half a second, and the rift itself vanished. Lin Moyu was shocked someone had actually attacked him through the rift from chaos. The attacker's power was immense, far beyond that of an eternal. As the light faded, the rift collapsed. Lin Moyu realized the attacker had not only struck him but destroyed the rift itself.
