Chapter 39: A Surprise Gift

“Let me say goodbye to my mother, then I’ll pick you up outside,” Griffin said, his voice low, to Angela as they returned to the gallery.

“I’ll say goodnight to George and Peter,” Angela agreed as they split up.

“There you are,” Peter exclaimed as Angela joined him and George at the front door. They were saying goodnight to their guests, Peter’s smile broad as he beamed with pride. Compliments of George’s work flittered through the air like confetti, ebullient voices echoing off the bare walls of the gallery. The atmosphere was festive, a fitting mood for such a successful showing. George’s expression was animated as he addressed each person.

“I was checking on things in the kitchen,” Angela answered.

A frown flickered across Peter’s brow. “I’m sure the caterers have everything in hand. You’re supposed to be having fun.”

“I am,” Angela assured him, her eyes drifting to Griffin, who was talking to his mother.

“Can we give you a lift home?” Peter asked.
