Chapter 38 BIRTHDAY DINNER

KATRINA’s P O V

‘‘Katrina, is that really you?’’ Sylvia’s face lit up as she approached us and then hugged me, giving me a kiss on the cheek. She was wearing a long dark green off-the-shoulder dress. The emerald necklace would perfectly match with her outfit. ‘‘I appreciate you coming. I am so happy to see you two together again…’’

‘‘Happy birthday, mom…’’ I greeted her, ignoring her comment. Cohen handed her the black velvety box containing the emerald necklace, after greeting her as well.

‘‘Thank you…’’ she muttered then began dragging us into the dining room, where I noticed Cohen's grandmother seated at the head of the table, staring at me with a furious stare.

I avoided her gaze and sat in the chair that Cohen had pulled for me to seat, before taking the spot next to me.
