‘‘Cohen!’’ Ella’s screaming his name didn’t bother him a bit as he continued to flee away from the scene, gripping my hand tightly as if he didn’t want to let go of me at any point.

I looked back and saw that Ella was crouching on the carpeted floor while Aunt Emily was hugging her from behind. Even though Mom wasn’t smiling, I could see her eyes dancing… It was bright with optimism, filled with hope.

Hope that there would be a chance for Cohen and I to rekindle our relationship? Hope that I would grant her wish to give her a grandchild as soon as possible?

That would never happen. I won’t let any of that happen.

A short time later, Cohen continued to leave his house with long strides and led me to his car which was parked in the garage. After we had settled in, he promptly started the engine, and we took off at a breakneck speed.
