On the endless plains, the dim sky suddenly shattered.
With a thunderous roar, the broken space scattered like shattered mirrors, and the cause of this was a train speeding through the air.
Perhaps breaking through the dimensional barrier triggered the defensive magic set by Tony Stark, as the entire exterior of the train emitted a ghostly blue light, while the red alarm lights flashed on and off.
"Oh my god!"
Billy Batson never imagined that Brainstorm, who was in the driver's seat, would dash headfirst into that strange mirror without a word. He almost thought they were heading for a crash that would destroy the train and everyone in it.
Alex, however, was as steady as a mountain. Even though the train began shaking violently, he maintained his balance and even grabbed Billy, who almost flew out of his seat.
"Don't worry, feeling dizzy is normal. Breaking into another dimension has a huge impact on the human body. If you feel like throwing up, there's a paper bag behind your seat. Just don't throw up in the train. I have a cleanliness obsession," Brainstorm said, keeping a firm grip on the controls while reminding Billy.
"Thanks, I can handle it... No, wait, I can't. Give me a bag!" Billy protested, barely three seconds later, turning to rummage through the seat pocket.
Looking out the window at the completely different environment from before, Alex squinted and stood up, moving next to Brainstorm and Franklin. "Did we make it?"
"Sort of. This should be a small dimension, but from the surroundings, it's clear that we're definitely no longer in the real world. So... yes, we made it," Brainstorm nodded.
Alex glanced back and saw the space rupture they had caused in midair slowly beginning to shrink.
As the pieces of the shattered space reassembled like mirror shards, the gap was visibly being repaired at an accelerating rate.
Noticing Alex's gaze, Brainstorm paused, sensing that he might not understand why this bizarre scene was unfolding. She quietly explained, "Spatial dimensions have a very strong self-healing ability. Although we forcefully entered and opened a rift, it didn't damage the space itself. It will automatically repair."
"Then why didn't the Mirror Dimension repair itself? Why did it turn into spatial turbulence?" Alex asked curiously.
"The Mirror Dimension is deeply connected to reality. This shows that the damage to the Mirror Dimension has reached a critical threshold, making it irreparable. Honestly, it's hard to imagine who would be powerful enough to destroy the entire Mirror Dimension," Brainstorm shook her head, sighing. She didn't know much about the battle from that time, only remembering that her parents sent her and her brother to a miniature dimension in another timeline to protect them.
It was there that she had enough time to study advanced technologies far ahead of their current time.
Listening to her words, Alex fell silent. In his memory, breaking or damaging the Mirror Dimension would require power on the level of the Infinity Stones.
Unfortunately, since these dimensions were beyond the reality dimension, Alex couldn't check specific details in the timeline.
"Get ready, we're about to land," Franklin, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke.
As he spoke, the energy-made tracks in the air twisted, resembling a rotating slide descending from the sky, and the train began to lower its altitude.
Brainstorm also took action, pulling the whistle while the train started braking. With the reduced force from the tracks, the speed of the train gradually slowed.
As they neared the ground, Alex moved to the window and gazed out at the unfamiliar, otherworldly dimension beneath them.
The Marvel Universe had many dimensions, and less than half of them had been discovered or were connected to the real world. So, Alex wasn't sure where they were.
He could only use his knowledge of this world to see if he could deduce any useful clues.
Looking out the window, the scene before him was vast grasslands. With a few yurts, it would almost seem like they were in Inner Mongolia.
"Residual energy here..." Alex furrowed his brow.
"You sensed it too?" Franklin looked up at Alex. "There are a lot of undead gathered here, and not just any undead."
Hearing Franklin's expressionless words, Alex's frown deepened.
He had noticed the 'familiar' energy right away. Having encountered the edge of Hell several times, Alex had become extremely sensitive to demonic and undead energies.
"This can't be an illusion. No one can deceive my Wizard's Eye, but I've never heard of a vast grassland in Hell," Alex said solemnly.
"It is strange. This grassland is real, but why are there so many vengeful spirits? Could this be part of Heaven?" Franklin blinked.
"Do you see any buildings around here that look like part of Heaven?" Alex pointed out the grasslands outside. A gentle breeze passed, causing ripples in the grass. The entire grassland was empty, and not even life remained.
With a loud blast of the whistle, a cloud of steam billowed from the bottom of the train, and it shakily came to a stop.
"Whatever is going on, we should get off and look around for some clues," Brainstorm said as the train finally came to a complete stop, jumping down from her small seat.
"Alright. Billy, are you okay?" Alex glanced back at Billy Batson, who responded with a silent thumbs-up, signaling that he was fine.
"If you're really not feeling well, you can stay on the train. We won't go far, just stay close by."
Alex stopped Franklin, who was eager to rush out first, and took the lead, stepping off the train.
Even though Franklin was powerful, this was an unknown dimension, and it looked very eerie. Alex wasn't about to let a child lead the way.
As he stepped off the train, he slowly relaxed once his feet made full contact with the grass beneath him.
He had been worried that everything around him might be an illusion, after all, sensing the deathly presence of the undead in the middle of a grassland was incredibly strange.
"Be careful. I haven't sensed anything yet, but we can't let our guard down," Alex warned, taking a few steps forward and looking back at the others.
Franklin, being a child, was curiously scanning his surroundings, amazed by everything.
Brainstorm, however, immediately started inspecting the small grass at her feet, as if there was something uniquely fascinating about these ubiquitous blades of grass that covered the land.
"Franklin, notice anything strange?" After several attempts to sense the area with no results, Alex turned to Franklin.
Franklin shook his head. "The energy here is too bizarre. I can feel traces of magic, but most of it has been corrupted by the undead."
"What we can infer is that this place was clearly part of a battlefield from back then, and the battle was far more brutal than we imagined," Alex muttered as he looked up at the sky.
The sky in this dimension had turned unnervingly dark. Countless formless souls had disintegrated into basic energy, drifting among the black clouds, emitting dull wails and stirring cold winds.
"Mr. Alex, I think I've found something," Brainstorm suddenly said.
Hearing this, Alex quickly walked over to her.
"Look," Brainstorm said as she pushed aside the grass, revealing crimson, slightly darkened soil beneath.
Both Alex and Franklin leaned in, but their keen eyes still couldn't discern much detail.
"Anything significant about the soil?"
"The soil isn't the focus. Although I haven't done a detailed examination, I can infer that this soil has been soaked with a large amount of fresh blood. No, that's not the main point."
Brainstorm dug further, revealing dark marks on the roots beneath.
"This should be burn marks, and it definitely wasn't caused by ordinary fire. This grassland must have experienced a supernatural fire, and what we're seeing now are the new shoots that have regrown."
Alex extended his hand and touched the still-charred roots. His brow furrowed deeply. After a moment of contemplation, he nodded grimly.
"You're right. There are clear traces of ancient dark magic here."
Besides that, Alex was even more puzzled by something else—these new grass shoots had completely covered the marks and energy.
If Brainstorm hadn't uncovered the grass, allowing Alex to examine the marks up close, he might not have noticed it at all.
"Alex... Alex."
As the trio continued investigating the eerie energy, Billy Batson stumbled down from the train, holding onto the handrail for support.
"Billy, if you're not feeling well, stay on the train. We'll be back soon," Alex said, looking worriedly at Billy. The side effects of dimensional travel were different for everyone, and there was nothing he could do about it. Billy was just unlucky.
But when Billy heard this, he shook his head violently, panting heavily, his face pale.
"This... this place is wrong."
Alex quickly stepped forward, supporting Billy by the elbow, speaking softly, "I know. We're investigating this. We need to confirm the location before we proceed, and you need to rest."
"No!" Billy grabbed Alex's collar, struggling to lift his head. His eyes were filled with terror, mixed with an uncontrollable anger.
"...You don't understand... this... this place..."
"I'm feeling... a prayer's power here."
"Prayer?" Alex was momentarily stunned, his face immediately becoming serious.
Billy nodded slightly, taking a deep breath, his expression filled with complexity.
"...And... and it's not a human prayer."
"...It's a god."
"...A god's prayer before death."
