Chapter 8 Giving Our Home a Makeover

Who would have thought that Ning Ruixi, who was so striking in the business world, was actually so inexperienced and shy about matters of the heart.

Gao Han had seen his little wife's shy moments many times, but none of them were as delightful as this one.

Watching the blush on that tender little face grow deeper and deeper, Gao Han finally spoke up, "Husband, very good!"

His face was expressionless, but there was a hint of teasing amusement in his eyes as he watched Ning Ruixi.

"Um..."

Ning Ruixi sat on the sofa with her head down, lacking the usual domineering presence, and indeed, a guilty conscience is truly a soldier's cardinal sin!

Gao Han placed the water he had taken out of the fridge in front of Ning Ruixi and casually sat down opposite her. He unscrewed the cap of the mineral water and took several gulps straight from the bottle.

As he swallowed, his sexy Adam's apple moved rhythmically. Realizing she was shamelessly gazing at him drinking and losing her image all the way to Uruguay, Ning Ruixi deeply wished she could gouge out her own eyes.

"The house has been unoccupied for a few days, there's no boiled water. Have some mineral water first, I'll go get some hot water."

Gao Han finished half the bottle in large gulps, placed it on the coffee table, and then asked casually, "What did you want to say?"

"I don't quite remember the past, so I don't remember what happened between us. If it's possible, could you tell me about our relationship?"

Ning Ruixi was accustomed to her own androgynous and low voice, and was almost startled when she heard the whimpering tone that sounded like she was coquettishly pleading.

Gao Han didn't notice anything off, but her words reminded him of some unpleasant memories. The bit of warmth on his face dissipated completely, leaving only an expressionless visage with an added touch of indifference, "I am a soldier, and I spend most of my time in the military. We were introduced by family four months ago, and got married a month later. We didn't hold a wedding ceremony because of the leave schedule."

"Huh?"

Ning Ruixi's eyes widened more and more. Those brief sentences were just brimming with bombshells. First was his identity – she had been curious about the remarkable aura he had, and now she learned he was a soldier. Then, getting married after a month – was this the legendary whirlwind marriage? And what was this about getting a certificate without a wedding ceremony? This...

Ning Ruixi struggled to digest this explosive news and it took her a while to regain her composure. Looking at the man in front of her, she asked softly, "You're a soldier? Could you be a special forces operator?"

She only mentioned special forces because of her scarce knowledge about the military, the closest thing being a popular special forces TV drama she had seen recently.

"Mm. I am now a battalion commander in the team," he confirmed.

Seeing that she had guessed his identity correctly on the first try, Gao Han's eyes flickered - amnesia? Coincidence?

Ning Ruixi didn't notice this detail. She was immersed in sheer astonishment, her already large eyes now stretched as wide as a cow's: "Husband, are you really a special forces soldier? Like the invincible ones they show on TV, as powerful as a Saiyan?"

Gao Han was startled by her rapid-fire awe-struck questions, and after a while responded calmly, "I'm not that amazing, special forces are just ordinary people after all. By the way..."

Ning Ruixi looked up at him attentively, waiting for him to finish his thought.

"My vacation is almost over. I'm returning to the forces the day after tomorrow. If you feel uncomfortable living here alone, you can go back and live with your parents."

This was something Gao Han had thought about in advance.

He knew he was not a qualified husband and didn't match well with Ning Ruixi. He was nearly ten years her senior, an old man detested by many, while she was a flower yet to bloom. The identity of a military spouse isn't something everyone can bear.

Thinking back to their first blind date, Gao Han became even more certain of his decision. She was a good girl; it was he who had held her back!

He had resolved to address the conflict between them with a cold approach, believing that separating amicably was the best solution.

What he didn't know was that the little woman sitting before him, who gave him a feeling of renewal, was no longer the Ning Ruixi who had betrayed him and whom he had caught in bed with another man!

Not knowing what Gao Han was thinking, Ning Ruixi took his words as pure concern and easily refused, "No need. We already have our own home, so why should we live with my parents? That would be so inconvenient. Don't worry, I have lots to do. I want to renovate our home to make it beautiful, and I'll surprise you when you come back. Just the renovation alone will probably take a few months, um, I hope we can find the chance to meet at least once or twice during that time!"

Ning Ruixi cheerfully shared her plans, and only after she had finished talking did she remember... uh... should she be more reserved? Perhaps the old Ning Ruixi wasn't like this, and it wouldn't be good if her cover was blown...

Just as Ning Ruixi had not spotted Gao Han's distractions earlier, he didn't notice the shift in Ning Ruixi's emotions now. When he heard her mention "our home" again, he couldn't deny that he felt a bit moved. Still, some things, once they happen, are destined to have happened.

"Then do as you please..." Gao Han stood up, his mood uncontrollably agitated, "But I hope that while I'm gone, you don't bring friends back home. I don't like the house smelling of strangers."

What Gao Han meant was a warning to the young woman not to bring her lovers home like in the past, but Ning Ruixi, unaware of the full context, completely misunderstood.

"Don't worry. I won't. I don't like the house smelling of strangers either."
