He might even think she was frivolous and unloving.

Instead of telling the truth and making him angry, she could create a good story and make him think she was fine with her husband, which would give him some peace of mind.

So she had to make up a perfect and plausible story, in which she must look happy.

With those words, Madeline got up and knelt down in front of Allen, with a sincere and serious face, "I'm sorry, Dad, I shouldn't have done such a thing behind your back."
