Gabrielle stared at the complex math problem, feeling like her brain was about to explode. She was never good at math, to say the least.
Choosing a college-level math course was an impulsive decision because she didn't want others to think she was just a pretty face with nothing else to offer.
Since she signed up for the class, almost all the guys in her department had shown up too... probably what you'd call the "beauty effect."
"This problem is too hard, even Sonia would get a headache!" she muttered to herself.
At that moment, the teacher noticed Gibson standing up and gestured for him to come to the front. "Please, come up here."
Gibson walked confidently to the podium, glanced at the problem, and scoffed dismissively, "This problem is too simple, it's not at my level."
Laughter tinged with surprise filled the room. Even professional mathematicians would need a good while to ponder this problem, and solving it within ten minutes seemed unlikely.
The teacher, visibly annoyed, pushed his glasses up and said sternly, "Young man, confidence is good, but arrogance isn't. If you can solve this problem within ten minutes, from now on, you'll be my master."
Gibson replied, "I don't need ten minutes, one minute is enough."
"One minute? Are you joking? That's not even enough time to think!" the teacher said, incredulously.
Gibson, brimming with confidence, said, "I figured out the solution in just ten seconds after stepping up here."
Gibson stood in front of the blackboard and quickly started writing with chalk.
The faster he wrote, the more the students below were dumbfounded.
Despite being a math class, the board was filled with letters, not a single number in sight.
"Done!" Gibson announced, casually tossing the chalk back into the box.
Before the teacher could even start timing with his stopwatch, Gibson had already finished. The whole thing took less than thirty seconds—just twenty-eight seconds!
"This can't be! It's just not possible!" the teacher exclaimed in disbelief, shaking his head.
He explained, "I only came up with this problem a few days ago and was planning to submit it as a sample. How could you solve it so quickly!"
Gibson patted the teacher's shoulder gently and said, "No worries, I have sixteen other ways to solve this, including using functionals, infinite-dimensional spaces, differential manifolds, topology, homotopy, etc. This time I used the simplest linear math formula, mainly because I was worried you wouldn't be able to keep up. Don't feel bad, being able to design such a problem shows you've got the basics down."
Everyone around was silent.
Gibson's words were almost a challenge to the teacher's authority.
This teacher was a highly paid expert from Starfall City University with decades of experience in mathematics.
However, Gibson's comment suggested the teacher was just a beginner!
As Gibson walked past the blackboard, he noticed a piece of text left by the previous Russian language class.
He picked up the chalk and casually corrected the grammar error, "There's a grammatical mistake here. Everyone just copy it as I've corrected."
This move shocked everyone present. He had not only shown his prowess to the math teacher but also casually corrected the foreign language teacher's mistake.
Even Gabrielle couldn't help but be mesmerized as Gibson walked towards her. Could this person really be the legendary genius, the one even the genius Sonia was wary of?
He's a smart guy, but he chose to be a security guard.
"Don't forget your phone, and don't leave it lying around!" He set the phone on the table and softly reminded, then added, "I've got to go, got work to do!"
Just as he was about to leave the classroom, the teacher finally snapped out of their shock and quickly asked, "Hey, would you be interested in working at Starfall City University's math research department? The pay is fifty thousand a month!"
"No thanks, I already have a job."
The teacher, curious, pressed on, "Which research institute do you work at? Can you tell me?"
"Wind Group."
The teacher paused, "Isn't that a pharmaceutical company? Oh right, Wind Group's pharmaceutical institute does need a lot of people good at math and chemistry."
He gave a slight smile, "I work in security at Wind Group. I'm a security guard."
Suddenly, the whole room burst into laughter.
Everyone was laughing so hard they were bending over, except for the teacher, who looked pretty gloomy. He thought to himself, What a recluse! Such a smart guy, content with working in security, clearly doesn't care about money anymore.
After Gibson left, the teacher tried to keep cool and turned to Gabrielle, saying, "Your boyfriend's quite something!"
"Teacher, he just likes to show off, don't mind him." Gabrielle said, covering her forehead, looking a bit embarrassed.
The teacher whispered, "Uh, could you give me his contact info when you have a moment?"
"Huh?!" Gabrielle responded, surprised.
Meanwhile, the girl with the ponytail sat in her seat, fists clenched. She had never been fond of Gabrielle and often looked for chances to make her feel awkward. She had planned to embarrass Gabrielle again today, but instead, Gabrielle's boyfriend ended up stealing the show.
Gibson rushed to Wind Group, already half an hour late. After parking his car in the company garage, he headed over to the security office. Just as he reached the door, he heard an impatient man's voice.
"Look at you guys, being so stingy about lending me some money. What, you think I won't pay you back?"
A young man with slick, shiny hair, wearing pointed leather shoes, was standing at the entrance of the security department, yelling loudly. This guy had just come by a few days ago to scrounge up some cash, and here he was again so soon!
Nolan stood at the door, looking embarrassed, and said, "Henry, we all have it tough, with families to look after. Could you maybe not come by so often?"
"Cut the crap! Just give what I asked for. You don't want to work here anymore?" The young man glared at Nolan and said irritably, "Talk too much and I'll ask for a thousand!"
"Is this supposed to be a loan, or are you just taking it?"
"What do you think? Of course, it's a loan, but when I'll pay it back depends on my mood. Don't worry, I'll definitely pay you back once I have the money. But right now, I'm a bit short, so it might take a while."
