What it is?

Jimin : If you notice anything weird, you let me know. Okay?

His smile was always so comforting.

I smiled back as I nodded my head.

Jimin : Since it's the outside, we just have to take a quick look and get back inside. We just have to check for any cracks or holes in the walls. Let's spread out a bit to save time. But stay where I can see you.

I looked around the schoolyard, surrounded by the U-shaped building.

Me : Okay, should I start from this side?

Jimin : Sure. I'll check the windows across.

Me : Sounds good! Let's get this over with quickly, and get some rest.

I started checking the walls next to the door we came out of.

I could tell the entire campus had been abandoned for quite some time.

Most windows were broken, but they all seemed safely secured with wooden panels from the inside.

I just had to look for any holes or cracks in the walls.

I bent down to check the walls carefully.

This just looked like a paint stain.

Me : Oh? What's that?

I noticed something white in the bushes.

I walked over to take a closer look.

Me : *gasp*...!

It was a long and white bone.

I jumped back at the sight but tried not to scream out loud.

Jimin : What's wrong?

Jimin heard me and rushed back to where I was standing, filled with fear.

He must have been keeping his eyes on me even from a distance.

Me : No, I'm just a bit shaken up.

Jimin : You sure you're alright?

Me : Yeah, I'm fine. It's just...

My eyes spotted something underneath the leaves on the ground.

It was something shiny.

I was certain it wasn't another bone. I carefully reached for it. It felt metallic, cold to the touch.

Me : It was a key?

I held the very ordinary-looking key in my hand. Jimin got closer to me and took a look.

Jimin : It might be for something important. Maybe it'll open some of the classrooms we haven't accessed yet. Let's go back and tell the others. Are you done with your side?

Me : Yup, all clear, And you?

Jimin nodded with a smile.

Me : Whoo! It's cold out here. Let's hurry inside.

I stuffed the key in my pocket as I headed back with Jimin.

Namjoon : Welcome back. Thank you for your hard work. The others have already gone to sleep.

Namjoon said he was off duty tonight. He must've been waiting for us as the leader of the group.

It must be tough waiting for everyone every day. Even going on night watch himself from time to time.

Namjoon : How did it go?

(? no.7) Kai : Same old. That model skeleton still creeps me out. Argh! Why haven't we thrown that shit out the window yet?

Sooya : I don't think that would make it any more pleasant to look at.

Yoongi : Anyways, the rooftop's clear too. No zombies.

Jimin : Yup, same with the schoolyard, All clear.

Jenny : Hmpf!

What's wrong with her again?

I decided to ignore Jenny and instead turned to Namjoon. It would be a good idea to tell him about the key.

Namjoon : Anything we should know?

Me : We actually found something while we were out.

Namjoon : Oh? What did you find?

Me : A key. Not too sure where it could go, though.

I showed everyone the key with a shrug.

Me : I hope it's somewhere useful. Yoongi told me there are still some places you haven't been able to open yet.

Namjoon : That's right. But it's not going to be easy trying all those doors.

Me : Yeah, but I still think it would be worth to try.

Yoongi : Wow! You found a key!! That could solve all our problems!

Yoongi was being sarcastic again. For a moment I thought he was being nice.

Jin : Let's get together tomorrow and discuss where we could try it out. I think we can come up with a list of places to try.

Me : That would be great!

Yoongi : You're really gonna walk around and try every single door here?

You've got some guts, man. Aren't you scared?

Me : Won't you help me?

Yoongi : What?

Me : You said it's dangerous. That's why you guys pair up for the night patrols, right? I just thought the same rule would apply to me.

Yoongi : Geez. I'm not sure if you're shameless or if you're that clever.

Yoongi sighed quietly.

Yoongi : Fine. I'll consider helping you, But only if I'm not tired.

I was unsure if I should thank him, so I just smiled awkwardly.

Jimin : Well, we should all get some rest. Let's call it a night.

Namjoon : Good night, everyone.

Sooya : You, too.

Kai : Night night~

Jenny : ...

Me : Good night, everyone.

I carefully open the door to my and Bogum's classroom. He had already fallen asleep.

I was starting to get more used to sleeping in darkness. I moved quietly to find my sleeping spot.

I closed my eyes.

It had been such a long day, but it was finally over. I felt strange.

"Next Day"

The sun rose as a new day started.

I would normally wake up with a feeling of relief that I was still alive as well as the fear of what I had to survive the coming day.

Bogum : Good morning! How was the patrol last night?

But it was all going to be different now.

We talked for a bit about what had happened the previous night.

He was especially interested in the key I had found.

Bogum : I have a good feeling about this. Maybe it'll open a secret door to a room full of treasures.

Me : Haha, there's no such thing, Bogum.

Bogum : Why? I'd love some treasures like pizza, fries...

Me : Right. What used to be common meals are so scarce now. I'd die for some fries, too.

I licked my lips as I reached to open the door.

But it was stuck.

Me : Huh?

Bogum : I want a hot bowl of soup. Oh, what's wrong?

Me : ...It's stuck.

Bogum : What?

Bogum came over to the door and grabbed the handle.

No matter how hard he tried, it would just rattle and not open.

I gave him a hand and even trying to pull together, the door refused to open.

Me : It feels strange...

Bogum : The door won't open, of course it's strange!

Me : That's not what I mean.

I felt like the door hadn't just gotten stuck. It felt different.

More than the door being stuck in one place.

It felt like something or someone was blocking it.

Bogum : What is it?

But I couldn't tell Bogum about my suspicion.

I was too afraid to say it out loud.

But I felt like there was someone or something jamming the door.

Bogum : *sigh*...Somebody must be up by now. Let's try asking them for help. Hey! Anyone out there! Help us!

Me : Can anyone hear us? Heeeeelp!

Bogum started banging on the door.

Bogum : Help us!!!! We're being eaten by a million zombies!!!!

But no one responded.

Were they still asleep?

Something might have happened to them. I had do something.

I looked around to try to find a way to get us out of the classroom.

Was there anything that could force the door open?

Something was definitely blocking the door and I had to know what it was.

I needed something thin enough to stick in the crack of the door.
