"You're joking right?" She asked me.

　　I picked up the phone and answered it, trying to keep my voice neutral. "Hello?" I said, not wanting to give away the fact that I was currently talking to my best friend about a very personal matter.


　　"Hey, Anna." David's voice came through the speaker, sounding upbeat and cheerful. "What are you up to?"


　　"Nothing much." I said, trying to sound casual. "Just hanging out with my friend."


　　"That's fun!" David said, sounding genuinely happy for me. "I'm glad you guys are spending time together. How's it going?"


　　"It's going fine…." I said, wondering why he was acting like a real boyfriend that he clearly isn't.


　　My mind raced as I tried to figure out what to say. Was David really interested in me as more than a a contract wife? Or was he just being friendly? I couldn't tell, and it was making me feel a little bit uneasy.


　　"Anna?" David's voice came through the phone, sounding a little concerned. "Are you still there?"
