CHAPTER 55

  Kara

  I slowly opened my eyes, adjusting to the light in the room. My senses heightened, but everything seemed fine until pain surged on one side of my body. I looked around: my arm had an IV. My nose had a respirator. And a machine beside me monitored my heartbeats. I recalled what happened on the road the fear, helplessness, and desperation. If I was in the hospital, someone saved me. I remembered Derek. Was he still alive? Did he save me? And my children? Were they okay?

  The pain in my body worried me. Bruises covered my skin. I wasn't healing as before. For the first time I felt like a normal human in this body. My babies wouldn't withstand such a magnitude of accident. Just imagining the idea brought tears to my eyes.

  "Kara," someone said beside me. I looked.
