Chapter 40 - Gifts Exchange

As a grown man, Percy did not relish holding a woman in his arms without making love to her, but his wife was only eighteen years old. She was content snuggling against him under the blanket, so who was he to ruin her innocence?

"Will you tell me what is so urgent that you had to leave?" Maggie asked, her voice as sweet as an angel's.

"Hmmm."

Percy's hand traced a smoldering path down Maggie's spine, lingering at the dip of her shoulder blades before following the curve to its sweet surrender at the base of her spine.

"My mother," he heaved a sigh. "Well, my stepmother, you understand, is causing a fuss again. Ever since we got married, she kept dragging Adrian from one ball to another, hoping to get him to settle down as soon as possible."

Maggie gingerly put a hand on Percy's chest and played with the buttons of his shirt.

"So you wanted to talk her out of her ambition?" Maggie guessed.
