In the world Elio lives, every gasp of air comes at a price.

Driven by desperation (and the city's miserly rulers that don’t cut anyone a break), Elio dives into the Book System’s trials to save his family.

The hologram showed a new creature forming.

The display showed a brilliant flash of energy. "Pure zinc-sulfur reaction. Blinding light, massive energy release, and complete control over the process thanks to the combined mastery of both creatures."

Elio studied the projection thoughtfully. "The wolf's senses would let it choose the perfect moment and place to trigger these reactions?"
