Chapter Forty-Five: Mountain Spirits

After several rounds, the once beautiful stalactites in the cave were hacked into pieces.

Nan Xianyi breathed heavily, surveying the swiftly moving white shadows around him.

Feeling a sinking sensation in his heart, he realized that these unknown entities were intentionally taunting him. If this continued, he would tire out and perish here.

With a resigned sigh, Nan Xianyi glanced at the lantern in his hand, which he had used earlier to see the direction of his opponents. However, he discovered during the fight that the lantern was nothing but a hindrance to him.

On the other hand, those mysterious beings, being inherently luminous, didn't need such tools. If...

The darkness in the cave deepened once more as several white lights converged in one spot.

Swiftly moving like fish in water, followed by several white light blades slashing up and down...

As the white light dispersed, the cave fell into darkness again.

After a while, a flicker of light appeared, illuminating the surroundings.

"Now, can you tell me? What exactly are you?"

The two points of light in the darkness gradually enlarged, revealing the forms of two children around seven or eight years old.

They had white wings and emitted a white glow, floating in the air like walking lanterns.

The little girl pouted unhappily. "Hmph! It's not fun at all."

But the other little boy looked at Nan Xianyi with admiration. "Wow! You're amazing! In thousands of years, you're the most powerful mortal I've ever seen here."

Thousands of years?

Nan Xianyi glanced at the two children in front of him, who appeared to be around seven or eight years old. Then he looked down at his own body, which had lived for twenty years, feeling strangely fulfilled in his twenty-plus years of life.

"You still haven't answered my question. Who are you, and who is the person inside?"

The little girl ignored him, turning her head away with a hum.

But the little boy scratched his head and smiled foolishly.

"We are the mountain spirits of this mountain, guarding the residents of this area for thousands of years. The one inside is our mountain god."

"But why have you come here? We will inform the mountain god."

The mountain god? How could that be? Was Zisang looking for the mountain god?

"I'm not here to ask for anything. I just have some questions I want to ask the mountain god in person."

"What? Want to see the mountain god? The mountain god is not someone a mortal like you can see!"

Upon hearing this, the little girl, who had already been displeased with Nan Xianyi, became even more agitated.

Despite appearing to be seven or eight years old, she acted sharp-tongued and mean, far from what a child of her age should be like.

"I mean no offense. I just have some questions that only the mountain god can answer."

Nan Xianyi tried to explain patiently, but it seemed that his explanations did little to dispel the little girl's hostility towards him.

"Forget it! The mountain god is not someone a mortal like you can see!"

Before the little girl could finish her sentence, the little boy covered her mouth with his hand and smiled apologetically at Nan Xianyi.

"She's always like this, sir, please don't mind."

"But recently, the mountain god has been in seclusion and is not receiving visitors. I'm afraid it's not a good time for you to come."

Nan Xianyi's patience had long been worn thin by them, and his expression darkened.

"Since the two mountain spirits are unwilling to guide me, I'll have to offend."

With that, Nan Xianyi walked inward, but the two mountain spirits naturally wouldn't let him in so easily. Just as both sides were preparing to fight, a voice came from inside the cave.

"What's the commotion outside?"
