Flames crawled across the ruins of what was once a mighty fortress, choking the sky with smoke, casting shadows over the blood-soaked ground. The air was thick with the scent of burning flesh, gunpowder, and death.
The Resistance fought like cornered beasts, outnumbered, outmatched, but unbroken.
Gunfire rattled in every direction, tracers slicing through the smoke like burning arrows. Swords clashed, metal shrieking against metal. The cries of the dying filled the night—a symphony of pain and defiance.
A lone Resistance fighter, barely more than a boy, stood his ground amid the carnage. His hands trembled as he reloaded his rifle, his uniform slick with blood—some of it his, most of it not.
A Dark Valkyrie loomed before him, her armor cracked but still gleaming in the firelight. Her wings, dark and tattered, spread wide like the shadow of death itself.
"Pathetic," she sneered, her corrupted sword dripping void energy.
She lunged—
BANG. BANG. BANG.
The soldier emptied his rifle into her chest, bullets punching through her armor, tearing into corrupted flesh. She staggered back, snarling—but still standing.
She raised her blade to end him—
The Resistance soldier roared and charged.
With nothing but a combat knife, he plunged the blade into her throat.
Black ichor sprayed across his face as the Valkyrie choked, eyes wide with disbelief.
With a final, wrenching twist, he ripped the knife free. The Valkyrie collapsed, lifeless.
For a moment, the soldier simply stood there, panting, shaking.
Then, he raised his gaze.
And his breath caught.
Above the burning battlefield, Aidan Blake stood at the peak of the ruined fortress.
Fire rained from his hands.
The sky itself burned with dragon's wrath, golden flames devouring the remnants of the enemy stronghold. The sheer power of the inferno made the Resistance fighter feel small, insignificant—a mere ember in a world of fire.
But before he could even process the sight, a cold whisper brushed against his ear.
"Die."
His blood turned to ice.
A second Dark Valkyrie loomed behind him, her blade raised high.
There was no time to turn.
No time to fight.
No time to—
BANG.
The Valkyrie's head exploded in a shower of gore.
Her body crumpled at his feet.
Across the battlefield, standing atop a pile of corpses, Elsa Bloodstone lowered her smoking rifle.
"GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND KEEP MOVING!" she roared, voice cutting through the chaos like a warhorn.
The Resistance, seeing her, seeing Aidan's flames, let out a battle cry.
They charged forward.
And the battle raged on.
....
Elsa landed lightly on the blood-drenched dirt, her crimson-stained boots kicking up dust. She unslung her sword, twirling it once in her grip.
Before her, Brunnhilde stood tall, her corrupted Valkyrie armor glowing with dark energy.
"You're persistent," Brunnhilde murmured, rolling her shoulders. "Annoying, even."
Elsa grinned. "I get that a lot. Now shall we start round 2?"
Brunnhilde exhaled slowly, raising her massive blade. The air around her shuddered with raw power.
Elsa's fingers tightened on her sword hilt.
Then—
They clashed.
Elsa met Brunnhilde's first strike head-on, their swords colliding with a thunderous crash. Sparks erupted from the impact, steel grinding against steel.
Brunnhilde pressed forward, forcing Elsa back, step by step.
"You think your mortal strength can match me?" Brunnhilde snarled, her blows coming faster, harder.
Elsa ducked a wild swing, narrowly avoiding getting her head taken off.
She retaliated with a quick slash, aiming for Brunnhilde's ribs—
Brunnhilde caught the blade mid-air.
With a smirk, she twisted Elsa's sword out of her grip and flung it aside.
Elsa barely had time to react before a fist slammed into her gut.
Pain exploded through her ribs.
Brunnhilde grabbed Elsa by the throat and lifted her into the air.
"Do you understand now?" Brunnhilde whispered, her grip tightening.
Elsa gasped, her vision going black at the edges.
"You were never going to win."
Brunnhilde reared back, then hurled Elsa across the battlefield.
Elsa hit the ground hard, rolling through dirt and debris.
She came to a stop near a pile of bodies, blood trickling from her mouth.
Brunnhilde stalked forward, her corrupted blade glowing.
"It's over."
Elsa, grinning through bloodstained teeth, coughed.
"Yeah?" she rasped. "You sure about that, sweetheart?"
Brunnhilde frowned. "What are you—"
BANG.
A single gunshot rang out.
Brunnhilde's eyes widened in shock.
A bullet punched through her side, tearing through armor, shattering bone.
From the shadows, crouched atop a ruined tower, Bucky Barnes lowered his sniper rifle.
Smoke curled from the barrel.
Brunnhilde staggered, clutching her wound.
She turned, glaring up at Bucky—rage twisting her features.
Elsa, still lying in the dirt, chuckled.
"Gotcha."
Brunnhilde staggered back, her hand pressed against the fresh bullet wound in her side. Ichor dripped between her fingers, but her eyes burned with undying fury.
Elsa spat blood onto the dirt and pushed herself up.
Bucky, sniper rifle slung across his back, leapt from the ruins and landed beside her. His cybernetic arm flexed, his knife gleaming in his other hand.
The two warriors stood side by side, their breathing ragged but their determination unshaken.
Brunnhilde exhaled slowly. Dark energy pulsed from her body, the corrupted power of the Valkyries twisting the air around her.
"I'll admit," she said, rolling her shoulders. "You two fight well."
She cracked her neck. The bullet wound in her side was still bleeding, but it didn't slow her down.
"But you'll need more than that to kill me."
Bucky lunged first. His metal arm shot forward, aiming for her throat.
Brunnhilde sidestepped and drove her knee into his gut, sending him reeling.
Elsa came in next, swinging her blade at Brunnhilde's head.
Brunnhilde blocked with her forearm, the impact cracking bone—but she didn't even flinch.
She retaliated, her fist colliding with Elsa's ribs. Elsa felt bones break.
Brunnhilde twisted, slamming her elbow into Bucky's temple as he tried to recover.
He stumbled back, vision blurring.
She turned on Elsa—
Elsa ducked under a killing blow, her enhanced agility just barely saving her life.
She drove her knee into Brunnhilde's wounded side.
Brunnhilde hissed in pain.
Bucky recovered, knife flashing—he slashed across Brunnhilde's back, cutting deep.
Brunnhilde snarled, twisting around.
She caught Bucky's knife-wielding wrist and squeezed.
Metal groaned, bone cracked.
Bucky gritted his teeth, refusing to scream.
Elsa saw an opening.
She drew her shotgun.
BOOM.
The blast ripped into Brunnhilde's side, tearing through armor and flesh.
Brunnhilde stumbled—but didn't fall.
Instead, she whipped her sword in a wild arc, forcing Elsa to dodge.
Bucky wrenched his arm free and slammed his metal fist into her face.
Brunnhilde's head snapped to the side—but she was still standing.
Elsa, breathing heavily, reloaded her shotgun.
Bucky wiped blood from his mouth.
Brunnhilde… laughed.
"You're both so damn stubborn," she muttered, spitting black ichor.
She raised her sword.
Dark energy swirled around her, pulsing with raw power.
Elsa's stomach tightened.
"Shit—"
Brunnhilde charged.
She moved like a hurricane, her sword a blur of death.
Bucky barely blocked the first swing, his metal arm screeching under the force.
Elsa ducked the second blow, feeling the air split above her head.
Brunnhilde's foot slammed into Bucky's chest, sending him flying.
Elsa fired again—
BOOM.
Brunnhilde knocked the shotgun aside at the last second, the blast missing her head by inches.
She grabbed Elsa's wrist and twisted.
Elsa screamed as her bone snapped.
Brunnhilde threw her to the ground and raised her sword.
Elsa rolled aside just as the blade pierced the dirt where her head had been.
Brunnhilde went for the kill—
Bucky came from behind, slamming his combat knife into her shoulder.
Brunnhilde snarled, spinning around—
Elsa, through sheer pain and fury, grabbed her discarded sword and swung.
The blade sliced into Brunnhilde's leg, cutting deep.
Brunnhilde staggered, momentarily off-balance.
Bucky took advantage.
He wrapped his metal arm around her neck and pulled.
Brunnhilde thrashed, elbowing him in the ribs.
But Elsa was already moving.
She drove her sword into Brunnhilde's stomach.
Brunnhilde choked, eyes wide.
Elsa grinned through bloody teeth.
"You talk too much."
With one last, vicious pull, she ripped the blade upward.
Brunnhilde let out a choked gasp.
Her body collapsed, twitching, the dark energy around her fading.
She was dead.
Elsa stumbled back, panting.
Bucky wiped his face, his knuckles bloody.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Elsa let out a breathless laugh.
"Well… that was a pain in the ass."
Bucky chuckled, shaking his head.
"Yeah. No kidding."
They stood over Brunnhilde's corpse, battered, bleeding, and barely standing—but victorious.
And as the flames of battle raged on behind them…
The tide of war began to shift.
