Unplanned

Alex adjusted the cuffs of his crisp white dress shirt, his dark blue blazer perfectly tailored to his athletic frame. He ran a hand through his neatly styled hair and glanced at his reflection in the mirror. Sighing, he braced himself for the evening ahead. His mother had arranged a date for him, and though he had reluctantly agreed, he couldn't shake the feeling of dread that settled in his stomach.

Arriving at the upscale restaurant, Alex spotted his date immediately. She was a petite blonde with perfectly styled curls, wearing a tight red dress that accentuated her figure. She stood as he approached, a bright smile on her face.

"Hi, you must be Alex," she said, extending a manicured hand.

"Yes, and you must be Lauren. Nice to meet you," Alex replied, shaking her hand and giving a polite smile.

They sat down, and as the dinner progressed, Alex found himself growing more and more disinterested. Lauren talked incessantly about her social media following, her recent shopping spree in Paris, and her plans for a glamorous summer vacation. Alex nodded and smiled in all the right places, but his mind wandered.

By the time dessert arrived, Alex could barely hide his boredom. He glanced at his watch, hoping for an excuse to leave. As they finished their meal, Alex paid the bill and escorted Lauren to her car.

"Thank you for dinner, Alex. I had a wonderful time," Lauren said, leaning in for a hug.

Alex hugged her back briefly. "It was nice meeting you, Lauren. Take care."

Relieved to be free from the tedious evening, Alex walked back to his car, contemplating how to spend the rest of his night. As he drove through the city, he noticed a familiar figure walking along the sidewalk. It was Eve, looking lost in thought.

Eve wore a simple yet elegant outfit—a black turtleneck sweater tucked into high-waisted jeans, with ankle boots that clicked softly against the pavement. Her hair was styled in loose waves, and she carried a small leather bag over her shoulder.

Alex pulled over and rolled down the window. "Eve! What are you doing out here?"

Eve looked up, surprised to see him. "Oh, hey, Alex. I was just taking a walk. Needed to clear my head."

Alex got out of the car and walked over to her. "How about joining me for coffee? I could use some good company after the evening I've had."

Eve hesitated for a moment but then nodded. "Sure, why not?"

They found a cozy café nearby and settled into a corner booth. Alex ordered a coffee, while Eve opted for a hot chocolate. The warm, inviting atmosphere of the café felt like a refuge from the outside world.

As they sipped their drinks, they talked about work, life, and everything in between. Alex found himself genuinely enjoying Eve's company. She was honest, straightforward, and refreshingly real. She wore minimal makeup, her natural beauty shining through.

At one point, their conversation turned to a debate about work-life balance. Eve passionately argued that people needed to make time for themselves, even in the busiest of schedules.

"I disagree," Alex said, leaning back in his chair. "Sometimes, to get ahead, you have to sacrifice personal time. It's just part of the deal."

Eve raised an eyebrow. "And what's the point of getting ahead if you're too exhausted to enjoy it? Life is about more than just work, Alex."

Her fiery spirit and willingness to challenge him intrigued Alex. He found himself admiring her even more. "You know, you're right. Maybe I need to rethink a few things."

Eve smiled, a twinkle in her eye. "Well, I'm glad I could change your mind."

As they finished their drinks and prepared to leave, Alex felt a sense of contentment he hadn't felt in a long time. Spending time with Eve had been a breath of fresh air, and he found himself looking forward to seeing her again.

Later that night, Alex arrived home, still thinking about Eve. He changed into a pair of comfortable sweatpants and a plain white t-shirt, his usual attire for unwinding after a long day. He moved through his evening routine mechanically, brushing his teeth and washing his face, but his mind kept drifting back to their conversation.

There was something so different about Eve. Her candidness, her fiery spirit, and the way she wasn't afraid to challenge him—it was all so refreshing compared to the superficiality he often encountered. He couldn't remember the last time someone had sparked such genuine interest in him.

Alex lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. He tried to analyze his feelings, wondering why Eve had such an impact on him. Was it her resilience? Her straightforwardness? Or maybe it was just the fact that she didn't treat him like the wealthy CEO he was, but rather as a regular person with thoughts and feelings.

The next morning, Alex dressed in his usual sharp business attire: a tailored gray suit, a crisp white shirt, and a deep blue tie that brought out the color in his eyes. He checked his reflection in the mirror, ran a hand through his neatly styled hair, and grabbed his briefcase.

Arriving at the office, he noticed the usual buzz of activity. Employees greeted him with polite smiles and nods as he made his way to his office. He was about to settle in for the day when his phone buzzed. It was a message from his father, Robert, asking him to come to his office.

With a sigh, Alex stood up and straightened his suit jacket. He knew this conversation was inevitable but had hoped to avoid it for a bit longer. He walked briskly to his father's office, knocked on the door, and entered when summoned.

Robert Knight sat behind a large mahogany desk, his silver hair neatly combed and his expression serious. He was dressed in a dark suit.

"Alex, come in. Have a seat," Robert said, gesturing to the chair opposite him.

Alex sat down, crossing one leg over the other. "What's on your mind, Dad?"

Robert leaned forward, clasping his hands together on the desk. "Alex, we need to talk about your future. You know how important it is for you to find a suitable partner. I'm very serious about this ultimatum."

Alex took a deep breath, his mind racing. He didn't want to argue with his father again, so he decided to take a different approach. "Actually, Dad, I've been seeing someone. It's still early, but I feel it's heading somewhere."

Robert's eyes widened in surprise, but then a smile spread across his face. "Really? That's excellent news, Alex! I didn't know you were seeing someone. Who is she?"

Alex hesitated for a moment, then continued. "It's Eve"

Robert's expression shifted to one of shock. "Eve Sinclair? This is unexpected."

"Yes, we didn't expect it either" Alex confirmed, keeping his voice steady.

Robert leaned back in his chair, processing this new information. "Well, I'm pleased to hear that. I think highly of Eve. Why don't you bring her to dinner this weekend?"

Alex forced a smile, nodding. "Sure, Dad. I'll talk to her and see if she's available."

Robert smiled, clearly pleased. "Good. I'm looking forward to it."

As Alex left his father's office, he couldn't help but feel a mixture of relief and anxiety. He hadn't thought this through and now needed to figure out how to approach Eve with this unexpected development.
