The air around me felt quite intense, but it was still and quiet as well as if a great battle was about to happen around me. I felt a sharp shiver running down my spine due to the stress that I knew I was going to feel either during or after the battle that was about to occur.
As I looked at all the different Terran citizens that were around the main street in front of me. Would we be able to save the citizens from being converted by The Fifth Column movement; or would we fail to save the people of this world from falling to the terrorist movement that that would lead a human can fall by betraying their people.
I felt a rush of uncertainty at the thought of what might possibly happen to these people who were not one of the leaders of this branch of The Fifth Column. Would they be simply used as disposable people for the cause; or would they become a group of people used as sacrifices for their cause. The thought of what might possibly happen to the people they we were trying to save made me feel very motivated because I would do whatever I could to save these innocent people.
When I saw the mercenary band leader walking back towards the entrance of the fifth column building, I signaled at him quick a pair of quick snaps with my fingers so that he knew that I was still sitting there and waiting for him as he had requested of me.
As the whole group approached me, I had to quickly push all the worry and doubt that I had lingering in my mind to the back of my thoughts because the mission objective took priority over my personal feelings as a representative of the House of Lupus.
"No one has come out of the building since you left." I whispered to the mercenary band leader.
"All right, then we are going to enter into this building and then kill all of the converted ones except for the leaders. remember that above all else, the leaders must be kept alive and used as an example to all of those that betray The Terran Collective." the mercenary leader said as he walked past me and leaned against the doorway with his weapon drawn.
After he entered the building, I quickly followed him since I was supposed to stay with him anyway for the entirety of this mission.
The entry hallway of the structure was quite narrow and made it quite difficult to see anything that was more than five feet in front of me due to the limited light that was meeting me. The reason that I thought that it was not very lit up, which I was assuming they had done to avoid drawing suspicion or possibly to avoid drawing a crowd.
I saw a large variety of different doors on both sides of the main hallway; but instead of entering the side rooms, the mercenary leader just kept pushing forward down the main hallway.
As I followed him down the hallway, I could feel that the tension in the air started to thicken when I breathed through my nose after every step that I took following him. Then I noticed that the other members of the team went into the different side rooms.
When we reached the end of the hallway, I noticed that the next room was a massive open room with a glass chandelier hanging from the center of the ceiling which must have been at least twelve feet from the floor. then I noticed that the room also had a black carpet from the center of the room that went to the reception desk and that there were two men talking in front of it.
I noticed that the first man that was to my left was the speaker who was trying to convince other people to join his cause. the second gentleman who was leaning on the counter was an elderly gentleman who wore clothing that was reserved for nobles and politicians which meant he was someone of high standing in either the political field or a representative of one of the noble households of The Terran Collective.
The two men had not noticed that the mercenary leader and I were watching them talk to each other from behind the door at the end of the entrance hallway.
Since they had not noticed us, I chose to drown out almost every other sound that I could hear except what was coming out of their mouths to hear everything that they were saying more clearly.
"So, we need to take all of the young females that have joined us and that that will not be of any use to the cause and sell them for profit." the public speaker said to the other man beside him.
"I will make sure that it happens as long as you ensure that the house of Tigris is kept out of any of the paperwork to ensure our immunity to the situation." the elderly man said as he offered his hand so that he could shake it.
Then, the speaker shook his hand in acknowledgment of what he had been asked to do, and they both went their separate ways.
"Danny, while I go and follow the representative of the House of Tigris, I want you to go and follow the speaker for The Fifth Column." the mercenary leader whispered to me after tapping me on the shoulder.
So, I quickly entered the room and turned to the right where, and I quietly followed the speaker for The Fifth Column as I was instructed to do despite my personal mistrust towards mercenaries.
As I walked down the hallway, I noticed that the speaker kept turning around as if he suspected that I was following him and I then chose to hide behind each of the support pillars that were in the building whenever I thought I felt his glance coming towards me.
Even though I knew that my job was to capture him I thought that if I ignored that for a bit and made my way to wherever he was going he might possibly lead me to his boss so I chose not to attack him yet and to continue to follow him instead.
When he finally stopped going down the hallway, I noticed that he went into a room after punching in a code that I could not see due to the amount of distance that I was trying to keep from him.
As soon as he entered the room, the door sealed behind him, and a set of metal bars resealed the door so that I could not enter unless I knew the password. while this would have been a problem for most people, I thought that I could use one of the power cells that I had stored away on my belt to enhance my hearing so that I could hear him through the wall after put it on my waist.
When I activated the power cell, I focused the electrical surge that was being sent through my body until it reached my left ear and stopped which caused a blue ring to show up around my ear that I was going to use to enhance my hearing.
Then I placed my ear against the wall, and despite the thickness of the surface I was leaning against; due to the enhancement, I was able to start hearing words that became entire sentences through the wall.
"Yes, master everything is going according to your original plan. we have obtained a decent number of followers, and we will sell the ones who are not useful to the cause as slaves through the black market. After they are sold, everyone will prove to have served a purpose towards the Fifth Column movement, even if that is only a source of temporary money.
I have also selected a handful of rare beauties for you to do with as you please. " the man I was supposed to follow said.
Then, after he finished talking, I began to hear a muffled voice that obviously used a filter of some kind because it sounded almost robotic. "Good work Fred you need to remember that the cause takes priority above all else. if the leaders of The Terran Collective council are allowed to live; it will be a massive hindrance to my plans. "
"Yes, master your will is mine to execute "he said as I heard one of his knees make a light popping noise as if he was kneeling.
Then, I ran to the first support column and hid from him. I grabbed my dual scythes and pointed them towards his throat from behind when he came near me.
"If you want to live, I would not make a sound and just follow me. also, before you try anything fancy, I am a healer with a rare type of healing that allows me to heal myself from any kind of battle damage. I just thought you would want to know that before you attempted it any kind of attack against me. " I said to him as both of my dual scythes were around his neck and causing a small puncture wound on both sides of his neck.
"Who... who are you?" he asked me as he began to breathe quite heavily when both tips of my melee weapons, we're making deep enough punctures against his throat for a small amount of blood to become visible.
"You and all of your captains are going to answer for your crimes against The Terran Collective. it seems that you are not going to be able to do exactly what your boss has instructed for you; how unfortunate. " I said as I began to push him towards the entrance of the building.
When I made it to the long hallway, I saw that all the doors were open and that Trent had freed all the people who were in chains by the apparent changes in their skin tone around their wrists and ankles.
"It seems that you have captured their leader. I honestly cannot wait to see what kind of punishment the higher-ups will have for him and all his betraying officers" William said as he began to laugh evilly at The Fifth Column leader as I was walking him out of the building.
As soon as I made my way outside of the building, I then could hear William again mocking someone else as they walked by him. William was certainly a very cocky and arrogant man when his side was winning the current conflict. I hope that, for his sake that he will learn the value of self-control.
"It seems that we did not have to kill anyone to find the captives here; and that they were also fairly recently picked from the crowds." Trent said as he left the building with an officer tied up, and he was carrying him on his back.
The man that he was carrying had a rope placed around his mouth to gag him and stop him from talking; and he was also squirming around trying to break free for at least a few minutes until he went completely still most likely knowing that he was not going to be able to escape from Trent's custody.
"I honestly wanted to kill some of them just to fulfill my daily blood quota." one of the mercenaries said as he waved his weapon around outside of the building.
After everyone had finally made it outside, I noticed that the mercenary leader began to spit on the man he had captured and started to talk to him disrespectfully.
Even though I found his methods to be a little bit extreme, I could not argue with his results. he was a much more effective mercenary than the ones that my father had warned me of as a child. due to my change in heart, I did not know if I should accept his offer or not; or if that day would even come for me.
So, Trent grabbed his handcuffs and place them on the wrists of the man that he had captured and he gave a hand signal to all of us that were originally a part of his team and we did the same to our captives.
While we followed Trent's instructions and used our talent dampening cuffs to ensure the safety of the civilians around us, I noticed that the mercenary band used a sturdy looking type of wire to bind their hands and I saw some red writing on it that seemed to glow when I looked at it.
"Now that all of you are bound; we will transport them to the capital city so that you may receive your punishment by the order of the House of Lupus." Trent said as we all started to walk through the alleyway that was in front of us and onto the main road.
When we were taking the prisoners down the main street, I noticed that all that citizen started to throw rocks at them and yelled and screaming showing their disapproval of the Fifth Column movement.
"You are scum!" the first citizen yelled as he threw a stone at the leader's face.
"Your kind is not welcome here on this world anymore!" A female yelled out of rage as she threw a stone at him as well as both children that were by her side.
The people continued to harass and torment the people who were about to get executed in a short while when we were on the way to the train station so that we could transport back to the capital.
It took us quite some time to get all the way to the Capitol because we had not requested for the train to stop making all its usual stops along the way to the place where we were supposed to take these traders.
After we had made it back to the capital city, there was a set of guards that wore a different symbol than all the other guards on their chest, which meant that they were elite guards. I was told meant that they had gone through much more intense training to become a much more effective force that only answered to the head of The House of Lupus.
"We will take it from here, and they will face a trial as prisoners of the state rather than honored citizens." the guard said as he handed a piece of paper to both the mercenary leader and then another one to Trent.
"You heard him we are done now with our mission. go home and get some rest since this was on the world and not on another world. There will be no day off tomorrow. I expect you to be in top shape for whatever our next assignment could possibly be." Trent said to all of us after looking at the paper.
Then I gave them my prisoner as Trant had commanded me to do and started to go my separate way from the group until the mercenary leader tapped me on the shoulder.
"Danny, before you leave, remember that my offer to you still stands whenever you change your mind." The mercenary leader said as he offered his right hand to me to shake it.
I shook his hand and quickly nodded my head up and down before heading back home to see if my wife had made it back from whatever mission that she had been assigned.
