Lessers

Chapter 128 Lessers Confused by Aleshia's stern outburst, the child was perturbed but replied, "Huh? I didn't say any jokes, miss." "Oh, it was nothing. What I said wasn't meant for you. Please disregard what I said," Aleshia quickly explained. The girl tilted her head and hesitantly repeated what she asked, "Um, are you lost, miss?" Aleshia almost said she wasn't but hesitated, "I guess I am lost. Do you know of any places where I can find lodging?" The girl's face brightened up after hearing Aleshia's response. She thoughtfully said, "Lodgings." After brooding the word for a moment, she added unsurely, "Um, I think you need to return to the gate out of the slums. Then, head to one of the gates that lead out of the city. From there, turn around and continue down the street until you find a sign that has a symbol that looks like a house." Aleshia considered her words. Given the girl's uncertainty, it seemed she didn't know where to find lodging and was answering with second-hand information. However, since she still shared her knowledge, Aleshia recognized that the girl had good intentions. Aleshia asked, "Do you know where the gate out of the slums is?" The girl didn't respond immediately, but when Aleshia patted her on the head, she gave in. "The gate back to the main city is down the road, but there are many winding paths to reach it. I can take you back. But I can't enter the city." Aleshia considered the girl's words but was confused by the last thing she had said. "Why can't you go into the city?" Aleshia asked. The girl appeared reluctant to share the reason, but with some gentle encouragement, she opened up. "I'm part of a class that isn't allowed to go to the main part of the city. We are considered lessers, and if spotted in the main city, we will be beaten and punished for simply existing." As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes, revealing the pain of having witnessed such brutality firsthand. Aleshia faltered before pulling the crying child closer to herself and comforted her. Lucia also helped the girl by using magic. She subtly healed her with the nature magic she had been experimenting with, and by the time Aleshia released her from the hug, the previously gaunt-looking girl looked healthier, but she still needed meat and food.
