Revelation

I'm in a dream.

My body feel like mush. I can't move a muscle.

One moment it feels like I'm floating in the cloud. The next- I'm flowing down a stream.

A stream of memories.

It starts off gentle, the memories of talking with my father, of looking forward to tonight. Then suddenly the stream starts to rage, the once calm waters furiously slammed me against the rocks laying on the path. Every time my unguarded body slams into the side of the rocks nightmares would flash in my head.

Nightmares of the cannibal monsters.

Nightmares of my father's last words.

Eventually the stream leads to a waterfall leaving me plunging down helplessly into the lake below.

As I sink down to the depth of the lake, I start to think deep about the events of tonight.

Tonight was surreal. Everything from the man eating monsters to my family's death has been surreal.

Almost like a shitty nightmare.

Or at least- that was what I hoped it had been.

Had it been just a nightmare it would have been much easier to take in.

But reality was cold just like the floor I'm laying on.

My heavy eyelids open and I was greeted with darkness. The basement was incredibly dark, I could barely see the tip of my nose. My body still felt battered, probably because the floor I slept on was stone hard and, cold too. Nevertheless, I pick my self up and start to fiddle around for a light switch. Running my hands along the wall, I eventually find a switch and turned it on. The lights flicker for a bit, looks like it hasn't been use for a while, then completely brightens the room.

My eyes was a bit blinded at first, due to the sudden change in lighting then, I saw it.

I was almost at a loss for words. For a boy like me, it was nothing less but amazing.

What was before my eyes was not a dusty basement like I originally thought but a full-on survival bunker. The lights reveal tall metal shelves stocked with supplies, chemicals, munitions and canned foods. The wall is lined with guns from rifles, pistols to shotguns.

Where did he even get these? Japan laws forbid carrying arms, unless-

Honestly, I was a bit taken aback. I knew grandpa was paranoid but to this extent? Now I understand why dad wanted me to get to the basement. But that begs a bigger question, did he know this would happen? Both dad and grandpa seems to know something about it or, was it just a coincidence?

More importantly-

My gaze is drawn toward the large computer setup facing the shelves. Jet black monitors are mounted all over the wall like obsidian tablets on a black monument. Four smaller monitors encircle a bigger monitor in the center. Below them, is a table where a radio and other equipment along with their wires are strewn messily about. This look like something straight out of an action film. It really gives you that doomsday prepper vibes.

Maybe I can find some answers on this computer.

I press the power button on the case, and the computer comes to life. The lights from inside brighten the case and - wait, are those LED lights? I thought only gaming pc has those? The thought of an old man in his 60s playing video games on a gaming pc with LED is kinda funny to me, so much so that I almost failed to contain my chuckle.

"Never mind that, he probably got tricked into buying it or something." I thought as put aside the funny feelings in my chest.

The black monitors brightens up, and I am greeted with a log in screen.

" Password required huh? Let's see-" Just as I prepare to type in what I thought was my password, my birthday, the screen suddenly flicker for a bit, and then it announced: " Retinal scan completed, welcome back master Miyuki."

The screen then changed from the log in screen to the desktop. But I'm surprised, he even got a retinal scanner. That's some tight security, maybe there's something important on this computer after all. There's a lot of folders on the screen, but most of them have one thing in common - they are all guides and instructions - save for one. A folder conveniently named Message and Explanation. I clicked on it and a video opened up. And then I saw a familiar face, that grumpy face full of wrinkle and that deep voice, I can't mistake it. It's grandpa.

" Testing. Testing" he repeats over and over as his finger tap on the microphone.

Ah, is grandpa alright, still bad with technology as ever. You'd think he'd at least have some notion of operating a machine, considering he grew up in the era that it was most used. He'd always make up excuses about how technology have changed a lot since then or that he didn't spent much time on computers. Apparently, he was more of a high school jock than a nerd, spent most of his time playing sports rather than messing around on computers. That would explain his cluelessness when it comes to tech.

" Damn it. Is this thing even working? I don't want to record for hours just to find out it wasn't recording like last time" He grumbles in an irritated tone.

" I can confirmed the microphone is working this time, Master." An unfamiliar female voice responded to him.

Who was that? That sounded a lot like an AI. Did grandpa own one? How come he never told me?

" Hello, Miyuki." he said in a gentle tone then continued in a serious one. " By the time you receive this message, there's a chance that me and your father isn't around anymore."

" I'm sure you have a lot of question. I'm not sure if I can answer all of them but I'll try to explain the main points." he stops for a moment then continues." if you're watching this video I presume you have already encountered the flesh-eating monsters then."

So he did know about those monsters. How come he never told us - me?

" The truth is-" he spoke in a deep and serious tone. " I already knew about these monster beforehand, but I wasn't sure when they will be unleashed on Japan or rather I was unsure whether they'd even get unleashed or not. That, and I was afraid that everyone would just chalked it up to me being paranoid, like always, but if you're watching this video then my worst fears have came true. I tried telling your father about it but I could tell he wasn't taking me seriously plus, back then, when I first told him, he was still drinking himself to dead after your mother left him. And telling anyone else wasn't an option either, you were too small back then and everyone else would just call me crazy. I couldn't rely on anyone, so I did the only thing I could - prepare myself and my family for the apocalypse."

" Using my connections I was able to prepare essentials for a doomsday scenario. I asked my old assistant, now the new head of my construction company, to build me a secret "bunker" under the house. I also asked some of my old friends in the military to smuggle me some guns for use. Afterwards, I began setting up the basement, stocking it up with food and supplies for long term use. I designed the bunker to sustains us for at least 50 years. I did all of this while you were still in your first years of middle school and while your father was still a pathetic drunkard."

I'm speechless. He did all of that when I was still in middle school?

" Now, there's a question that I know you're dying to know the answer to. How do I know about the monster beforehand? Well I'll tell you right now....
