A day has passed since that fateful night.
I spent the next day holed up in my grandpa's basement studying his survival guides.
As I sat in front of the bright screen watching him demonstrates and explains things, a sense of nostalgia wash over me. This takes me back to my childhood, grandpa would often spend a lot of times with me since my dad was busy all the time. He would teach me many things from life lessons to self-defense techniques… He was a strict and stern teacher and sometimes his harsh scolding would scare me but, there would also be moments where he reveal a different side to him - a much softer, more gentle side. He would always have a gentle, melancholic smile on him whenever he shares a story from his past with me. Back then I was young so I couldn't understand much but I could tell he was happy, that underneath that rough appearance of an old veteran there was a man who cherished his comrades and family above all else. Seeing his figure and hearing his voice again remind me of those days. For some reason, it made my heart felt warm and fuzzy inside.
I continues to spend the next day also studying in grandpa's basement up until the smell of decomposing corpse start to get to me.
"I completely forgot about that zombie." I sighed to myself, placing a hand on my forehead. I decided it would be best to dispose of the rotting corpse outside so I wrap the zombie's corpse in a used blanket and prepare to head outside.
Equipping myself with a bike protective gear and some weapons - a pistol for ranged, a baseball for close- quarter and a shotgun for good measure, I head outside.
It was morning outside, the scenery was quite lovely in all honesty. The morning sun shone through the trees, casting a warm, golden light over the peaceful scene. The leaves rustled gently in the breeze, creating dappled shadows on the ground.
The morning sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting a warm glow over everything. The birds sang and flitted from tree to tree, filling the air with movement and color. The streets were clear of any zombies, making the scenery even more peaceful and beautiful. The sun peeked through the trees surrounding the clearing, casting soft golden light onto the asphalt road. The leaves rustled gently in the breeze, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
The atmosphere was a complete contrast to the night before, when death and despair filled the air with an oppressive weight and monstrous creatures prowled the streets in unnerving silence.
I open the door to my home and went outside, checking left and right to make sure I don't get surprise. Seems like the streets isn't completely devoid of zombies yet.. I can see some of them lying face down underneath the shade of a tree nearby and some hiding inside of abandoned houses.
"You can't fool me, zombie. I know you're just playing dead"
I'll have you know I watched a fair amount of zombies movie before, enough to know that you should never trust a random corpse to not be a zombie faking death.
" Alright. Now how should I approach this..."
Should I just go in gun blazing, shooting every zombie I find? No I have terrible aim and the loud noise will attract more zombies. But what if that worked in my favor? If a gunshot can lure all zombies to my location then I don't have to bother running around to find them... No that's a terrible idea, I would get overwhelmed immediately. I stand there thinking for a while, trying to come up with a plan. After a few minutes , I finally decided on an approach.
" Ok now that I've got it. Let's get to work" I said as I drop the corpse that I have been lugging around on the porch.
Holding the baseball bat with both of my hands, I sneak up on the zombies that are currently laying down on the grass. Finally standing in front of them, I breathe in a deep breath and swing down my baseball bat with everything I've got. The zombie let out a loud death grunt as it's head is caved in - leaking blood and splattering small bits of brains everywhere.
" That was easier than I thought. The zombies that night was much stronger." I thought to myself but there was no time, the zombie next to it was slowly waking up.
I lunged at it and swung my baseball at it's face - putting my back into it. The baseball slams head first into the zombie's face as it tries to stand up, making a loud * crunch* noise as bones break and flesh deform underneath the force of the swing.
But I'm really surprised, I didn't expect them to die this easily much less their entire face caving in and bones breaking. Either I have become a superhuman ( which is not likely) or the zombies are weaker. Just then I realized something.
" Maybe the sunlight has something to do with it, almost all the zombies are avoiding it"
If that's really the case, then this is big news. Zombies are only able to hunt at night and they are confined to shade during the day, not to mention they are also significantly weaker too. I might have a chance to survive after all!
" But really... this information..." I can't stop grinning at all, excitement is welling up inside me.
This is truly fantastic, a wonderful news indeed. If I can experiment the effect of sunlight on zombies, I would not only be able to control them but maybe also exterminate them.
" Heh.. Hehe.... Hihihiihi"
I probably look like a creep right now. But more importantly, I'm pumped up. This is probably the most motivated I've ever been.
" Alright... Let's do this!" I said while raising a fist in the air.
I began to clear out my neighborhood of any zombies still remaining. Sometimes luring them out of their hiding place into the sun so I could kill them easily. Sometimes I would get a bit overwhelmed and have to use my pistol to thin the numbers, and that was when I realized my aim could use a lot of practice.
It's almost night already, this took a lot more time than I thought. The sun was already setting and the sky was dyed a crimson red.
I hauled over the last of the zombie corpses on a cart I found to a pit I recently dug - where piles and piles of zombie laid stack on top of each others. The disgusting smell of rot has already attracted tons of flies, I hold in the urge to puke and dump the remaining corpse into the pit. I poured in some gasoline from a canister and set fire to it. The smell of burning corpses is nauseating. Looking around the neighborhood - now cleared of zombies - I pat myself on the back for doing such a good job.
But this is only the beginning, I still have a lot to do if I want to thrive in this apocalypse. Thinking to myself, I went back into my home to rest and plan the next day.
