Chapter 10.5: Determination

"… And that brings us to the present day."

Grandpa let out a long sigh, his face downcast, his eyes reveal his distress.

Even I am speechless too. My mind is still struggling to process the information explained to me.

" I don't know what's happening in this world anymore. I don't know when such an weapon will be unleashed on our country." His voice was grave. " But… I do know one thing for sure. When the times come, you must not show weakness, or this world will devours you alive"

He continued:

"Take an advice from an old man who's been to war and seen unspeakable things. When chaos come crashing down, when laws and order is flipped upside down and peace is broken, every civilized man out there is gonna revert back to the savage barbarian they once were. This is the end of the world now, every man is out for himself. So must you, trust no one and depend on no one, protect yourself - trample on others if you must, for you life is what matter most."

" I have told you everything I know. You may have questions, but I fear I can not answer any of them. In the other files, I have shared all of my survival knowledge and offered my advice on what steps to take next, leaving you with everything I have to offer. Good luck to you, son. Remember what I said - trust nobody and show no weakness."

With his final words, the video ends.

My eyes are still fixated on the screen when suddenly…

" Garhhhhgg!"

A low growl can be heard from outside the locked door. It's the monster, I'm sure of it. It survived it's wounds - a testament to it's durability and regeneration. My eyes turn from the screen to the gun rack next to it. A black pistol is calling out to me, it demand I end the frenzied creature. I hold it in my hands, it has a considerable weight. So this is what power is like, the ability to decide whether someone live or die. I put in a loaded mag and aim at the creature. This is my first time wielding a gun, but I'm not scared or nervous. I can't hear anything anymore, the only thing I see is the creature in front of me and the power in my hand. I thought back on my grandfather's words, if I'm to survive in this world then I must use any means necessary.

I must become stronger. Become more ruthless. Even a tyrant if needed. A tyrant? That's right… I must become a king of the wasteland!

And to do that I must toss away my weak self. I must kill my weakness. Today will be the last time I shed tears. In order to not lose anyone again. This monster's death will be my first step to becoming stronger.

With that in mind, I pull the trigger.
