NEW GIRL(4)

Evan was standing by his car,constantly checking his watch and waiting for Kate to come out. It's been thirty minutes after the school had closed and she still hadn't showed up yet. His strands of patience slowly getting loose,he was on the verge of getting in the car and driving off and living on the ignorant bliss of him ever driving Kate but he couldn't do that,his parents would eat him alive if they get even as small as a wisp of him leaving their beloved friend's daughter in school with no means of transportation to get home.

The school was already empty,no students was seen again, only teachers,some of their cars still in the parking lot and Evan was the only student that was standing beside his car and impatiently tapping on his foot.

How dare she keep him waiting,a text would be nice,he then remembered they didn't exchange numbers,she could have at least met in his class and informed him rather than making him guess what she's up to.

Another thirty minutes passed making it an hour that he had been in the parking lot,his lips in a thin line because of how tight he gummed his teeth together,his cheeks reddened with anger as he watched her come out of the school with her three henchmen,she laughed and said something to them.

She had the effrontery to laugh while keeping him waiting,Evan thought, anger boiling within him as she neared. She hadn't even notice him standing right in front of the car.

A blonde boy beside her nudged her and pointed at Evan who was gritting in anger. Kate eyes widened as if she just remembered something important,she said something to her friends and waved them goodbye,they cornered and left her while she walked to Evan with her head down.

When she reached him,she immediately apologised "I'm sorry,i didn't mean to keep you waiting,Ken asked me to join a club and i couldn't..."

"I have no interest in whatever you're saying,i already regret taking you to school and back home,don't make it already worse as it is. You can't even keep to fucking time,you should have the modesty to fucking give an heads-up rather than let me stand here like a fool for a whole hour just because I was waiting for you. Get in the car and please for fuck sake,new girl,don't say anything to worsen my mood" After saying his piece, he opened the driver's door and entered,slamming it so hard and loud that she flinched a step back from the animosity.

After staring at him through the windows for thirty seconds,he horned and revived her from her blank stare urging her to enter the car.

As he had instructed, she didn't say a word even though she was dying to say something, apologise or give him a piece of her mind for shouting at her and not allowing her to explain.

He parked in front of her house and didn't say a word,she already knew what she was supposed to do but she felt extreme need to clarify herself of the thoughts in his head against her "Evan,look. I'm sorry about what happened,really but you don't get to be a dick about it without hearing an explanation. I know what i did was pretty fucked up especially since it's the first day but I definitely...." He abruptly stared at her making her loss for words,it was so sharp and fast that she felt like his neck was probably broken from the force.

"I don't want to hear any words of explanation, you know why?..." He asked and she shook her head "because I don't give a fuck,now get the fuck out of my car before i drive off to my house leaving you to walk back home" After his stabby response,he turned the gaze away. Kate looked hurt,her hard demeanor cracking as her eyes watered a bit. He didn't say anything too harsh but the animosity and hatred in his tone made her want to crawl under her bed and cry.

He hated her and she knows why,because of what happened yesterday. He was being a jerk too and she didn't even spit out awful words or glare at him with hatred,she gulped,closed her eyes,breath in and out before staring at him.

"You know what?..." He paid her no mind whatsoever but she continued,with every anger in her,she spat out "FUCK YOU" She then opened the car door and rushed outside slamming the car door as hard as she could wishing it would crack and break.

Evan gripped his steering wheel hard refusing to look at the direction of the new girl who he had just hurt.

He sat there for ten minutes without moving,only when he realised that he was still parked in front of her door did he start his car's engine and drive off but not home...he called his fling on phone and requested that they meet in an hotel far away from him home.

The girl wasted no time in meeting him in the hotel room "Hey,Ev...".

"No long talks,get on the bed..."

The next day in school, the seniors were gathered near the school's board,trying to see their names and their ranks but mostly trying to see who top the whole senior class.

"Evan is always first,I don't need to check"

"He's always been the first since freshmen year"

"So fucking smart"

"I wish he would tutor me"

Evan walked past the girls who did a bad job at whispering but he paid no mind to them and just head for the notice board,as the students sight him,they moved quickly,clearing his path.

Ember,out of nowhere rushed towards him and held his arm "Good morning and are you going to the notice board?" She asked and he nodded.

"We both already know you're the first,why do you still bother checking?".

"The sea can not always be calm" He simply said and said no more only walking with Ember by his side.

When he reached the crowded board and everybody sighted him,they gasped and hurriedly cleared the way,while looking at him with a emotion called pity,one he was awfully familiar with.

He ignored them and checked the board.

He started from the fifth name like he was always does.

KATE FUCKING TYSON is the first,the first time in six years,Evan Smith was second,under somebody's name.

Right on time,Kate walked in with her three new buddies smiling and chatting with them ignoring the looks thrown at her today.

Evan was rooted in the same spot not knowing what to do at this moment, he ranked 2nd place after all this years.

He was numb,his heart beating fast and his head in jumbles. What this failure he was feeling right now?.

Wasn't karma just being wicked right now? The same girl he insulted yesterday,ignored this morning was the girl who had bested him. He was pathetic but he wasn't going to walk out in shame,rather he would walk out of this crowd head high and confident. This little slip up wasn't going to get a hold of him and she had only bested him in just one mark,she beat him with just a mark.

Unlike his plan to walk away while Kate and her friends approach the board,Ember had other ideas.

Her nose flaring,she matched up to Kate "You fucking cheated, bitch".

"KPAI" The sound was loud and clear,Ember held her cheek with wide eyes while Kate seems apprehensive,she stared at her own palm in shock "My hands always moves on their own when am being insulted with such vulgar words. Excuse me" Kate said and then used her hands to push Ember out of her way and walk up to the notice board ignoring Evan who wasbeside her staring.

Ember still stunned could only stare far ahead in shock,Evan stared at Kate who was searching for her name downwards. He snickered at her dumbness,he didn't stop her from slapping Ember because Ember was technically at fault but he won't admit that.

He went to Ember side and they start walking,Ember eyes raging,she wanted to go back and fight Kate but Evan's grip of her wrist was tight and refusing to let go.

The same time they left was the same time,someone cried out "Kate,you're the 1st in the rank,you beat everybody and Michael is the 3rd,right under..." The person gasped as she said outloud "Evan's".

Evan gritted his teeth and pretended he didn't hear that.

When they reached Ember's classroom, he let's go of her hands and proceeded to leave her alone but she panicked and ran to hug him from behind "Am sorry,I didn't mean to do it and i technically got punished for it by that bit... the new girl".

His body softened,he held her arms on his wait and released himself before turning to face her,her face red and the hand print from Kate's fingers still visible.

"Am not mad,go to the nurse's office and get an ice pack. I'll head to class now" His voice soft, although still sharp,his actions speaks different. Ember look at her palms that he was holding and smiled,her heart beating erratically in her chest but she couldn't enjoy the feeling of his palm anymore because he let her go and left the classroom without saying a word.

Evan hated the way he was being stared at,it was something he was used to but this time it was of failure and it irk him as much ad it pains him.

He needs to do something about this new girl...she wasn't just going to show up out of wherever the fuck she's been just to beat him and humiliate not once and not twice.

A/N: The chess competition is going to take place next chapter so we can finally move on from the past.
