Max and Sophia exchanged numbers, their fingers touching as they handed each other their phones. "I can't believe how lucky I am to have met you," Max said, his eyes shining with excitement.
Sophia smiled, her heart racing with joy. "I know exactly what you mean," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
As they walked out of the coffee shop together, Sophia's phone suddenly rang. She hesitated, her eyes apologetic. "I'm so sorry, I have to take this," she said, answering the call.
As Sophia answered the phone call, her heart raced with concern. "Sophia, it's me, Rachel. I'm so sorry to bother you, but it's an emergency," her sister's voice was laced with panic.
Sophia's grip on the phone tightened. "What's wrong? Is everything okay?"
"It's Mom. She's been in an accident. She's in the hospital and...and it's not looking good," Rachel's voice cracked.
Sophia's world stopped. Her mother, her rock, her everything. No, no, no. This couldn't be happening. "What happened?" she demanded, her voice firm but shaking.
Rachel's voice was laced with tears. "She was driving home from work and...and a car ran a red light. The doctors say she has severe injuries and...and they're not sure if she'll make it."
Sophia felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Her mother, her lovely mother. No, this couldn't be happening. She had to get to the hospital, had to be there for her family.
"I'm on my way," Sophia said, her voice firm. "I'll be there as soon as I can."
Rachel's voice was barely audible. "Thank you, Sophia. I'm so scared."
Sophia's heart went out to her sister. She was scared too, but she had to be strong. For her mother, for her family. "I'll be there soon, Rachel. Hang in there," Sophia said, her voice filled with determination.
Sophia turned to Max, her eyes filled with tears. "I have to go," she said, her words rushed. "It's an emergency."
Max's eyes filled with understanding. "Is everything okay?" he asked, his hand reaching out to hers.
Sophia nodded, her eyes filled with a mix of worry and apology. "My mom's been in an accident. I have to get to the hospital."
Max's face fell, his eyes filled with concern. "Oh no, Sophia. I'm so sorry."
Sophia's heart swelled with gratitude. "Thank you, Max. I have to go."
Max nodded, his eyes locked on hers. "Go, Sophia. I'll be here for you," he said, his voice soft.
Sophia nodded, her heart grateful for his understanding. With that, she turned and hurried away, leaving Max standing alone outside the coffee shop, wondering what had just happened.
